congrats on joining the bike community, the XS650 is a nice bike but I would not recommend as a first bike especially at that age if your pretty new to bikes.

Just my two cents but think an XS if in good mech condition would be a good 1st bike. Pretty basic simple machine but reliable if maintained. Standard servicing is easy and good to learn basic mc servicing on. Don't know if your weight is a factor? Are you big-tall or big-n-short? If really long legged you may find it a bit cramped but it should haul your 400# ok. My buddy Jim had an XS and he's been known to drink too much occasionally so I'd get designated to get Jim and his bike home. Between the 2 of us together we probably weighed in at about 350#? I considered the performance adequate 2 up.
Easy bike to learn basic maint and riding with.

I say good trade. I assume "need paint" rather than needs pain....

fuck pain & I wouldn't worry about paint.... at least not yet
