Good oh,

Sorry for the slack posting the last few days.... I'm still in Hua Hin, being a social butterfly and having a look around.

A couple of quick snaps. Me with my favourite ladyboy. No... we aren't dating... she delivers the food from the restaurant at the sports bar I've been hiding in.... the one that keeps me away from the girlie bars. I'll see if I can get a shot when she's dressed up. Let me say it again btw... we aren't dating.... or anything else.

Actually, I've spent more time out and about rather than in the bar. Had to laugh when I saw these guys giving their engine a bit of a freshen up... scrubbing up the pistons and rods in a plastic bucket. I wonder if they re-use the old head gaskets?

The reason I'm still here is that I want to do a fishing trip with one of my drinking mates from the bar. It was supposed to be the other day... but now its Monday. In the meantime, I've commandeered a Navy patrol boat

Not a bad boat actually.

OK... Time for a beer. Might try and get to the kick boxing tonight.

Looks good.

A friend from a food writing course I took a while ago visited Hua Hin, have a gander at her delicious adventures here: http://www.strayedtable.com/2011/08/...-hin-thailand/

How long are you planning to spend in Thailand? Have you given any thought to visiting some of the more relaxed islands like Ko Tao or Ko Phangan? Vehicular ferries run from the mainland daily, I think. Three weeks to do the day until I trade Adelaide computer nerd lifestyle for Ko Tao scuba instructor lifestyle. Can't wait.

Burma is opening up rapidly. Might be possible to check it out...

Finch... I toyed with the idea of the islands for a while, but decided to head north instead. I'm loving Thailand, but am finding it expensive... although, I can't say I'm trying to rein the expenses in. Hell's bells, I've even bought some new duds.

Now, don't go getting any wrong ideas, btw. That's my friend Pom again. She's lovely, but I found it more than a tad offputting when she gave me a peck on the cheek. Go for the lips luv... and its gunna get nasty around here.

I posted my new suit off home today... but hung onto the trousers. They sure do get some discussions going. A couple of young American girls went gaga over them. They're for McGrath Day at the cricket next year btw,

I'll try and do a full update later. I went fishing yesterday and I'm heading to Kanchanaburi in the morning. I need to get north if I'm to beat the monsoon. The pressure is off re the carnet, from what I've read. Not needed for Laos, Cambodia or Thailand. (Speak up if you've heard different)

Kanchanaburi is the jumping off point for the Burma railway. I've got a distant relative who died up there in WW2, so I'd like to have a good poke around. I didn't look his details up last time I was home, but I'll see if I can track down one of the few remaining oldies in Oz and get the details.

... as for that food link Finch... guess where I had brekkie. Fabulous. Much better than yesterday's Burger King omelette .... hey... Troy, the fishing guy rang just as I was about to get some Thai food.... and said "we're at Burger King... can you meet us now?"

Caught about 8 fish btw.... which I gave to the girls at the Sports Bar.

Hey Bigfella, I'm glad there is a good reason you bought that pink suit - hate to think it was because you liked it and were going to wear it to one of your "client" meetings

I have to say..... my eldest son is right. You'll never attract more women than when you are wearing pink. Mate... if I was single, I'd go out and buy about three outfits. Its an absolute chick magnet... but I'm not, and its only for the cricket!

My son has worn his pink suit to the races - and was worried he wasn't going to get out alive. The other son ended up being interviewed for Indian TV when he borrowed it and wore it to the cricket.

BigFella - I'm off to Bali for a few days and will probably toddle around on a hire bike for a couple of the days - any top spots you'd recommend?
Cheers Rob

Thanks Swamp... much appreciated.

Rob... be aware that the cops apparently like to stop westerners on hire bikes and "fine" them if they haven't got an international licence. It never happened to me (of course, because I've got one). I liked Lovina, nice little town on the northern side of the island and its a pleasant ride up over the mountain to get there. Its worth going out and harassing the dolphins too. I didn't explore the NE part, but it looked nice when I flew over it recently.

Now... before I get this RR totally out of whack, here's some shots of the ride up along the Gulf of Thailand coast. First up, not far from Chumphon, there were lots of fish farms

Lots of paddle wheels churning away, which I presume keeps them aerated. I saw a big government research centre for this too.

Plenty of nice beaches. No surf to speak of on this side of the peninsular... that's all over on the west coast, but by here that's Burma.

I think every single Thai, all 65 million of them, must own a fishing boat.

This is something I didn't see much of in the early part of this trip. Roadworks. Malaysia and Thailand roads are SO much better than those in Timor-Leste and Indonesia.

Funny story about this bridge. I'm pretty sure it was this one...

I tootled over it, stopped and took a photo... then decided to poke around to the right. Checked at the intersection, yeah, car a fair way off, going slow, so I pulled out and tootled off slowly. Someone beeped a horn behind me... and I gassed it and pulled a massive bloody wheelie. Pay attention Ian... It turned out it wasn't aimed at me, but me not paying attention meant I didn't know that.

That whole "paying attention" thing makes it damn hard when looking for accomodation. I don't book ahead, because if I get too tired, or if I spot somewhere nice, I stop. The other element is sometimes people tell you "X" is really nice... and you get there and go "ughh". When I got to Kanchaburian yesterday, I actually poked around for over an hour before I found somewhere I was happy with. I'd only ridden for a bit under three hours so I had time to do it without being dog tired and in danger of going a truck whilst looking.

While I'm digressing... I found the bike's top speed yesterday. I'd been close a few times, but had never let it settle to its Vmax. Its lower than I thought it would be.. 190. Then again, I'm one tooth down up front and three teeth up at the rear. I was having a bit of fun with a couple of locals at the time.... a nicely done up E36 BMW and some sort of new GM shitbox. They were a bit serious... the Bimmer guy even used the bike lane at one set of lights.

Now, back to riding up the Gulf. There's lots of fish drying operations along the road. Small fish...

I poked along on a lot of back roads. Passed plenty of remote "resorts". I hadn't even noticed the supports on all these palms at the time, so I'm guessing they were transplanted in for one of the new resorts

Plenty of small fishing villages. I think this one is just north of Prachuap Khiri Khan

I'm interested in the snakes here... but I'm not interested in chasing live ones. Still haven't seen a cobra

I'm betting these guys don't pay the same sort of extortionate mooring fees that my government demands

,,,, and here's a nice shot of the headland north of PKK.

Yeah... I use photobucket. I had to upgrade to the pro version because of the number of views, but it isn't that expensive.

I've improved my processing times. I was shrinking each shot individually using Paint.. but I threw Photoshop CS5 on when I was home in April and I'm batch processing. I'm uploading 48 photos at the moment... about 38 Mb.... and its painfully slow - mainly because I haven't got 3G reception here for my PC.... upload speed is around 6Kb/sec.

The computer spits the dummy from time to time... and photobucket crashes. I guess I haven't got enough memory... and I'm running out of disk space. I took 354 photos today btw.

I guess that's why I got behind at Hua Hin... when there's people around that you are talking to, its hard to get things started.

I started this RR so the wife and kids could follow along. It turns out that unless I email the kids directly, its all a bit too far from the "here, right now" mode. The missus catches up from time to time.

btw... some photos of the pig farm at Lake Toba, generously funded by an anonymous inmate, have turned up at home. I've asked for them to be scanned.
Enjoy the Europe trip.

After my climb up that damn rock, I was exhausted and dehydrated.... and it was midday by the time I checked out of the hotel. I did a short ride... around 100 km, up to Hua Hin... my last seaside stop until Cambodia.

I'd read that some guesthouses there were located on piers, so I crawled around that part of town, scaring the crap out of the odd dazed tourist who stepped out in front of me. I even ended up down on the main fishing / navy jetty before I found what I was looking for.

I popped a nice little wheelie for them, of course..... but over here is my hotel. The big one is the Hilton

Mine is the nearest pier to the Hilton. I got the penthouse suite.... well, the biggest room, out on the very end. Two king sized beds .... one to spread all my gear out on, No aircon, but two fans. Western style dunnie... but no cistern... just a tub of water and a ladle.... and a sink that dropped its load directly onto the floor - a very common arrangement. I got on quite well with the cleaning ladies there... a couple of big fat mamas who always had a smile and a cuddle for me.

First job was to get the laundry done. The lady who ran the front desk didn't even get out of the room before I unloaded the stinkies for her. The shirt she's just bagging was the one from the morning's climb... totally soaked in sweat.

Wandering in to a restaurant on another pier for a late lunch, I came across these.... carved solid wooden shovels. Amazing.

Oh yeah.... It seems that there's some specialised tourism going on in Thailand. Want your nuts cut off? Cheap? This from the Bangkok Post.

Here's my pier from just under the Hilton.... from one of the seafood restaurants

At low tide, the shoreline would be 20-30 metres out past my room on the end of the pier. Depending on timing, the fishermen would leave their squid boats where the were anchored... or move them out with the tide, so that they could go out at night.

I took a wander around... it was getting late and the beach was pretty much empty of tourists... but the horse touts were still there

I didn't inflict myself on the poor little ponies

This bloke wasn't quite so lucky.. I got him to take me up to a shopping centre to try and sort out my data sim card (again)

No shortage of taxi drivers sitting around killing time. Playing draughts... using beer bottletops.

I had to laugh at this one. 15 years ago, I developed a customer service strategy for a major police force... but we never did think to label police stations like this...

There was a shop selling all sorts of gear that'd get you nailed back home. I was so tempted by an air pistol.... but have no room to carry it really... and then there's the borders, This one was nice... reminded me of the crossbow my brother made

This chap (?) was just getting his hair styled. All a bit much for me.

You see all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff here. This gave me an idea for an outside sink... maybe

.... and when I got back to the pier....the ladies had been trying to make some money

Shit. Today was my catchup day... had great plans to get up to date.

Got press-ganged by 8 Thai guys... taken on a tour. Apparently we are drinking for another 5 1/2 hours.... until 3am.

Ughh.

OK... things are hotting up here at the moment. There's talk of a "back way... local roads" route to get me to Chiang Mai. I'm behind in my uploads and write-ups... because its been all go.

I'm in Sankhlaburi (I think... somewhere near the Burma border). If these guys can work it out, I'm heading straight up beside the border. Its worth a shot.

In the meantime... have a pussy shot or two ....

and yeah.... when a 210 kg male tiger throws his head back at you.... it wakes you up... in a hurry...

..... so, if I head off up the border, I'll be out of touch for a few days... but what's new eh?

.... and for the Aussies. Hellfire Pass is a tear jerker. 700 of our blokes died there. Don't miss it if you get the chance... and do the lot of it (tour groups miss 2/3 of it)

So... I owe you Hua Hin and Kanchanaburi....

Well... a relatively quiet day today. Bit of a slow start after getting on the piss with the guys from Bangkok... up at 6 for brekky with them before they went rafting ... and then back to bed. Extended another night and tootled around here. The run up the border is off... the rivers are too high and too fast until September... which is after my visa runs out.

So... let's catch up a bit.

Hua Hin. Its a nicer version of Pattaya, so I'm told.. (apparently.... because I haven't been to Pattaya) Pattaya got its start in the R&R days of the Vietnam War.... or the American War of Aggression, as the Vietnamese have been known to call it... more commonly the American War these days. R&R. Rooting & Recovery.

Hua Hin has its girlie bars, but it doesn't have the harsh edge... the stories of girls spiking your drink with heroin and then sharing the bribe with the cops. I don't know if that stuff is true... but it was told to me by those who I would expect know.

I liked the feel of Hua Hin. I liked the sports bars and the general flavour of the town. You could walk down the street and there'd be a pig on the spit

or a chopper outside a tat shop. You'd never get this one registered in Oz. I'd seen it go past a couple of times and recognised the engine noise straight off... from the good old days. CB Honda Four. I got the size wrong. I thought it was a 750, but I'm told its a 550...

Anyone got a protractor... I want to measure that fork rake

I happened into the Celtic Bar... a sports bar... and got on well with the folks there. This is Na, the owners cousin, pretty much the bar manager

and a couple of the other regulars / staff

This is Pom... my fabourite ladyboy... and the only one I've let give me a cuddle

.... bit too much muscle in the cuddle for my tastes. Pom does the deliveries from the restaurant at the bar and does a "show" at various other bars later at night. I finally caught her show and it was bloody dreadful... a lipsynch Beyonce number... or something equally 'orrid.

Because I'd been friendly to Pom, I got the full mincing cuddle every time I saw her. Hmm OK.,

I have to admit... I did hang out and play pool in one of the girlie bars too. The girls at the Paradise Bar were nice and the music was good. I rang the bell at both bars a couple of times.. after a careful look around... and that's a shout for everyone in the bar. Not too damaging.... if done early. I sure as hell wasn't buying the drunks a beer... only got caught by one once.

I did some local rides... this is one of two gate guards on some damn huge gate out in the middle of nowhere, on the way to the temple celebrating a famous monk.

The local girls all wanted their photo taken in the business region of the statue of the bull elephant. A very true to life statue... if you get my drift. Big fella.

Very big

I bought the flowers and incense

Normally appreciated, but I have heard the "farang" (westerner) word spat out a tad when one has made too much of a show of local traditions and habits.
