Tomos Honda RC50 Moped build

Got this in the spring and am just about done with it. All I have to do is weld up the basket and a rack. I'm planning on going south of the border with this...originally I was gonna have it done in summer and ride it to Sturgis but.... So more recently I was thinking of riding down to the Panama Canal but looking at the distance and how much time I have I won't make it. Now the plan is to ride Baja this winter and maybe next summer ride to Sturgis.

I made it as low cost as possible so I won't be out too much $$$ just in case I get bike jack south of the border. The thing that took the longest was lining up the chain, chain and carb/manifold clearance. The electrical (head/tail light, stator, wiring harness etc) is completely new, only the ignition/cdi is OEM Honda. It was tough finding automotive wiring but finally got 10 different colors. Some cutting here, welding there, grinding, soldering and machining. New brake lines and controls, motor rebuild. All the Honda parts are from CRF50/70.

So it went from a 2speed 2stroke 30mph to a 3speed 4stroke 40+mph. I believe I can get it faster but am limited to gearing, Have the tallest sprockets I can put on. Also motor wise it is mostly all crf50 except a BB sleeve and piston. The reason why I did this is to increase my fuel mileage range for travel and keep the motor running cooler. I would of like to make it a 50mph bike but think I will do that once I get back from my trip.

So now I just need to tune the carb and ride it as much as I can before my trip to give it a shake down.

Awesome build!

I want to do a big ride on my small scooter too but am afraid of highways and fast moving cars as well as....hills!

I am sure sprocket specialists can get you some taller gearing. That transmission can be modified to accept a manual clutch and an extra gear as well.

Reminds me of a Sachs Madass in a way but looks better....looks ace,in fact.

RC50 I like it!!!!!!!!

yes the fender hits the air filter, just a litte bit I don't think it give me any issues.

That thing is amazing and cool. I think you can run a set of michelin boppers, could that help your quest for taller gearing?

Yes I did sell the Symba. To a guy from Alaska that moved here to the Bay Area.

The orginal tires are Savas and I'm now running the Boppers as you can see in the pics. I love the boppers, think they are the best tires in their size. Had them on the ruckus when I rode San Jose to Denver and back, still looked new when I got back.

Extremely well done!! A very creative modification.

When you get back from Mexico consider a Lifan 125 semi-auto motor. $259 delivered from PCC Motor on eBay (search under "Lifan Semi-Auto Basic") plus a 24mm Mikuni ($35 from the same vendor)=57 MPH on my 10" wheeled BBR/XR-50 with 16/31 gearing. This motor gives you what amounts to an overdrive fourth gear and it ran so well in my fiddy I bought another one for my Passport--and a third will be going into a CT-90 project I'm building. Great motors and you can't hot-rod a Honda motor for what these sell for. (Trust me on this one.) I prefer to use the Honda stator and electrics although the Passport is using the Lifan stuff--works okay but just not Honda quality. The motors are awesome, though and highly recommended for anyone in need of a replacement for their small bike or just interested in more power for the 50/70 Hondas.

The Lifans are wider than the stock Honda motors on the clutch side and require a wider footpeg bar. The shifter shaft is shorter than a stock Honda but the motor comes with a shift lever. The cylinder is longer than a stock Honda, too which requires you to modify the rear exhaust hanger since the pipe is mounted a bit farther forward. Otherwise it's pretty much a bolt-in proposition and anyone who's used these motors are very pleased with the results.
