Rode through snow on the road on the way to Argentina....I passed a car that had spun off the road due to the slick roads...I wonder what they thought when I rode by....Perfect place for an overloaded KLR with mostly bald tires front and rear!!!

low elevation camping

Found another moto traveler (Craig from Canada) down at low elevation (12,500ft) that had stopped for the night due to the weather. He made room for me under this covered parking spot. Had a nice dinner in the restaurant, and talked about moto travel and South America. Craig keeps his bike stored in Montevideo and comes down each year to explore more of whatever he can reach in the time he has. I see a plan coming togehter for my future.....

Salar de fuckifiknow

I didn't make it to Salar de Unuyi in Bolivia. Rainy weather, the $140 visa, and being burnt out on difficult travel in Peru made me skip it. So, I was excited to find Salar de Fuckifiknow in Argentina,.... not near as big as Salar de Unuyi but still cool....

emnpenadas....

I was going to be in trouble if i didn't try empenadas from Salta... I almost made it to Salta, but was stopped short of there by about 30 miles when I came across a creek/river flowing down the road at night, with heavy oncoming traffic, and a torrential downpour. That was my sign to call it a day....

more gas issues

all across northern Argentina, there is some sort of gas shortage. I was warned by several riders I talked to across Chile and the Paso Jama to not pass up any gas stations. I came across several stations that did not have any gas at all.....and there isn't alot of gas stations anyway. Made for several times of riding for periods of time hoping that I would come across a gas station soon that had some fuel....

into the flood again....

rode through an all day long downpour. The road had the worst truck tire ruts I had ever seen. The water was so deep that the spray off the front tire would knock my feet off the footpegs at times. somehow, the bald tire overloaded KLR stayed upright.....The cities I went through were mostly flooded....

first argentinian policia stop

Oops....passed on a solid yellow line with two other cars....right in front of a argentinian police car....of course, the policia pass the other cars and come after me....i sped up for a while to see if they would give up, but they were persistent....so, I finally slowed down and at first waved them by, but they were having none of that...they yelled at me to pull over.....once stopped, they ask me for all my papers and license.....I give them the same pile of paperwork from Panama that I have been passing out to all policia in south america.....then they ask for seguro (insurance)....at first, i play the 'no intiendo' game, but they are not giving up....so, I give them my allstate printout from the usa....that seems to satisfy them for paperwork, but then they start telling me that they are taking my license and that i will have to pay a fine to get it back....they talk amongst themselves and decide that the amount of the fine is $100 usd....i tell them that I don't want to pay the fine there, and that I am ok paying the fine at the court....they insist that I can't go to court because I don't understand spanish, and that i have to pay there....I tell them (using my ipod translator) that I don't have any money, and that I will have to go back to the city to court to pay....with that, they hand me my panama paperwork and 'license' back and tell me that i can go.....
by far, the hardest policia stop yet...
