Question California model

How can you tell if your KLR is a California model? Is it in the VIN or Engine #?

I'm in Florida and believe my new 2011 may be one. If it is, is there a down side or upside to it being a California girl?

Anyone used the Conti. TKC80's? How many miles did you get. I'm using the Dunlop d606 now and it works great, but I'm looking for about a 7000 mi longevity. Any suggestions?

TKC 80 , Best front tire ever for KLR and gravel/pavement combo PERIOD
rear not so much
rear use MotoZ desert

Avon Gripsters for mileage 17-18000 km on a rear routinely - and the single most important handling fix is addressing the rear suspension either with a Top Gun spring or new shock altogether. I thought the front Gripster was a little vague 'til I put a new spring on the shock - it feels like an entirely different bike.

Few ways:
  • Run the VIN through this checker, should pop out. Not sure what you mean by engine #, you might be talking about the VIN plate on the engine.
  • The gas tank will have two vent lines, starting where the seat meets the tank
  • Should be a black canister looking thing under the rear clutch side cover

A bit extra weight and better for the environment, otherwise I don't think there's a performance + / -. Whereabouts in Central Fla are you?

Put the vin through the checker, and it basically confirms it's a KLR650E made in Japan, 2011 model. Nothing about California.

It does have the canister, the two vent lines from the tank, and the rectangle box under the left side cover, same side as the shock preload bolt.

I'm in Eustis.

I'm wondering why a California bike would be sold in Florida? I can understand if it was used, but new? I guess it's no big deal, and a plus if I ever move to California.

Cool beans. Let me know if you need help doing the doohickey, or if you swing up. There's some fun dual sport roads that are perfect for a KLR.

The motor is made in Japan, not the entire bike.

There's a canister in front of the shock pre load adj. bolt.

Aren't all new KLRs (and most bikes for that matter) now 50 state legal? (IE: Commiefornia certified)

I don't think so. I see lots of bikes outside CA that dont have all the smog stuff on them.....

Fixed my sentence.

I think most all motor vehicles are now 50 state legal because they figured out it was too expensive to change things around for different markets. Especially since Kommiefornia legal also means it most likely is Euro complaint too.
