How to loose 10 lbs off your KLR

I just installed a new Battery for my KLR and it's almost 10 lbs lighter.

If you get one keep the foam that the battery comes in because you need it to fit the battery in the compartment.

It will only loose 10% of it's charge sitting for one year so no trickle charging.

How much does 10lb loss cost?

I paid $152 and that's really not much more than a sealed battery and it comes with a 3 year warranty.

Seems like a worthwhile mod. I'd love the extra space to put a small power distribution block and fuses.

$152 is not bad, but sealed batteries can be had for much less. I paid $44 shipped for my sealed battery. Of course, I have to keep it topped up in the winter, and it's not got a 3 year warranty.

I was thinking too what could I put in there with extra space? But in the end I filled it with the foam.

I riveted a shelf in my battery box for similar LiFEPo battery. Leaves a nice storage area below. Haven't decided what to put in there but most likely my HID or FI components will find a new home there.

Question KLR vs. DR650

Broad question here: What do you gain or lose between a DR650 and a KLR? AND is there ANY advantage to an 08+ over 07 and older KLR? FYI; I like the quick handling of my DRZ over an 08 KLR(limited saddle time). Just looking for more top-end, fuel range and carrying capacity.

I think one thing would be more available parts for the KLR because they made so many.

added: DRZ is air cooled.

Talking stock bikes here:

KLR - bigger fuel tank, nicer seat, slight interstate advantage
DR - lighter weight, better suspension

The DR is slightly more offroad capable with it's lighter weight and better suspension, but the seat is not very nice.

I'm not aware of any advantage of the 08+, other than looks. It's got more plastic, so it's more prone to damage if dropped.

I must look a little weird coming down the road but I bet I'm more visible now. If anyone asks, I'm going to tell them my KLR has a nuclear powered fuel cell and that's why it glows...
Looks cool, but might freak out some shotgun wielding locals mistaking you for space invader!
