Yes they are pricey. They seem to wear fast until the half way point, then they last a long time. Not very good in mud. I've had 4 sets.
I got 6000 to 8000 miles. Fair in rocky terrain. Didn't chunk but some of the knobs split on a well worn set I had. I would buy again.

From one (multiple) KLR owner to another, it would be a SIN not to take the two-track home. Always.

no KLR for me, yet anyways! The guy was a real dick, didn't want to answer any questions, etc. Wasn't someone I felt comfortable dealing with.

Love my '08. It doesn't burn a drop of oil with close to 20,000 km on it. Kawi did the wiring harness and all new signal lights for me on recall so call the dealer and give them the vin # and they'll tell you about it. Don't let 'em scare you off the '08s - only some of them are bad. Just try to get the truth about whether it's burning oil and why the guy's selling it such low miles.

Well I am going to the CU tomorrow to see if they will loan me $2,800 for a 2005 with 24K miles on it. I have been without two wheel transportation for too long. Hope to be on here alot picking your collective brains about mods and maintenance.

About that topbox . . .
You might want to talk to the HT guys if you haven't already about weight issues. The 2012 manual lists a max of 22 pounds on the stock rack. The topbox weighs what, like 6 pounds? That leaves only 16 pounds carrying capacity. I imagine HT has a way to increase capacity, though I haven't asked.

I just got a 2005 a few days ago, I did the valves and doohickey as soon as I brought it home. Valves were almost out of spec, and the doo looked good with 5,500 miles on the bike. The air filter is tiny on these things, odds are it will need cleaned.
