Near here, by any chance?

And yeah, I have never before seen as many "No Trespassing" signs as I saw in the four days I spent in the surrounding area.

Looks about right. There were Multiple buildings with a main "street' between them. Probably doesn't look the same as I saw it since it was around 1988 the last time I was there. As I remember we went from Mitchell to Waterman and turned left. We then turned Left again through a gate. The camp was a ways out that road and on the Left.

well, if I'm correct, then it is my turn.
This is a sign NOT erected by the forest circus, but has been in place for many years,,you follow the signs to iron springs into the forest to see this,,

Name the area, the town below, or the lake nearby.

Nevermind,,
somewhere above magone lake, but between Bates and Sumpter,,Indian springs,,
maybe,, I really would have to ride there,,have no way of finding it onna map!,,it's one of those,,"I remember where Rick fell in the cowshit,,then we turned right, and up the hill",,moments.
Maybe Sector remembers,, I know RangerRick does,,but he's up there right now,,chasing the big elkburgers,,John Day,,ride east,,turn left somewhere,,climb to the top of the ridge, fill yer camelback, and walk to "Iron Springs",walk up to the lookout,,pee in the bushes, ride back down the mountain.
I give,,,,somebody with a working memory go for it!

Fruita sounds like the correct answer to me. It looks like Fisherman has abandoned this thread so I vote you go ahead and post up a picture. Your turn Wallowa.
