You are correct.

Was looking for either Payette (which you gave) or the name of the structure when built which was (from my research) Baker Air Force Station, also sometimes referred to as the Baker Radome. Radar dome on Dooley Mt. would of been close enough.

From my research, the Baker AFS was not part of the DEW Line or the OTH system. But it was part of the Cold War warning system.

Some history and other info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker_AFS

http://radomes.org/museum/documents/...RgymTNT73.html

http://www.radomes.org/museum/docume...FSORhoops.html

As a child living new La Grande, it was not uncommon to be on the highway to and past Baker (what is now I-84) and remember seeing the radome on top of Dooley Mt. When the site was closed, it was common knowledge around NE Oregon that the Air force was willing to give the dome away if you paid to have it moved. I thought it would make a great fort on the hill above our Farm, but at that time did not realize how big it really was nor had the funds to make it happen. The funny thing is that now where I currently live, I can see the dome from my house. Barely see it through the trees, but it is still less than a mile away.

Figured someone my age or even older may remember the radome from when it was on Dooley Mt. or when it was moved to Payette and know right away the answer. There was a lot of news coverage about the move to Payette at the time. The original site is a fun ride. It is on a high mountain top and offers great views of the Elkhorn, Blue and Wallowa mountains in the distance. The paved road to get to the road leading to the original site (Dooley Mt. Road) is (as I have mentioned before) one of the best sections of pavement in the region for riding on a bike.

Here is a view from the original site.

David, you're up.

On the other hand, i don't know if you could see this from I-84 unless you were somewhere up high like Meacham. (That part throws me.) I also found there was an air base in Cottonwood (ID) with a nearby radar site on top of Cottonwood Butte. Are we getting warmer??
I forgot to post the link about US Highway 95.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_95

US 95 runs through Payette and the dome can be easily seen from the highway. I always knew US 95 ran through Oregon and Idaho, but was not sure about Washington. Knew it might be close to Washington in the area north of Lewiston, but did not know the real story until I found the above link. Figured it would be a fun clue as a major north south highway could only cross all three states if it was near the Idaho/Washington border. Just one more piece of trivia we can learn from this thread. My next clue if needed was going to see what the closest mile post was to the dome in Payette and if the dome could be seen from that spot, listing that as a clue.

Edit: The milepost is 68 and you can clearly see the dome from the milepost.

Thanks for your post so I would remember to share this info.

Also, Thanks to all who played along on this location. I had fun with it.

OK, I was going to do a really tough one but then I found this picture and it just spoke to me. What is the name of this structure? That is my sister-in-law peering through the window.

Interesting. I work on the Radome in Pendleton and the system that must have replaced the Baker site is now in Fossil, Or (JSS, which replaced SAGE). Pretty cool. The radome that's now in Payette was originally designed by Buckminster Fuller as a house. Go figure.

Poopie gets the scoop!

My SIL worked and lived there a couple of summers (a long time ago) when she was on a Hot Shot Crew. We stopped by to take a look. It is now rented out for overnight guests through the Heppner Ranger District.

Whatca got, poopie? (luv that handle)

No, the other radar dude with the KTM. Must be all that radiation we are exposed to that attracts us to 115HP dirtbikes or something.
