I gave it my best shot
Some lookout stuff from memory so don't quote me. I had a friend who was a fire lookout in his youth and used to spout lookout lore.L4 house on wooden frame. Very common in Idaho. L4's could be purchased as a kit. 50ft, or so tower, This one has external stairs and storage bin under the house. The same tower is on several St Joe peaks, ie, Conrad, Roundtop (gone) and I think Freezeout LO was the same. In Idaho most LO had the trees cleared away from the towers, for fire reasons. Small trees around the tower base infers it is probably decommissioned. Trees on the top of the peak leads me to believe it is from central/north Idaho, the land of trees, so it will probably be in the Blues. I'm too lazy to google the hundreds of LO in the NW. At one time there were 1000 LO in Idaho.

y'know what??
If they'd keep them pesky trees burnt back like they do in Idamaho, ya wouldn't need to build a lookemout to see over 'em,,jus sayin,,
![]() Pinion Peak lookout,,burned right up to the lookout with the watcher reporting in the whole time, imagine watching that! that one is a whole lot of switchbacks to get in or out! double ended vehicle a plus! but when the entire mountain is on fire, and you are at the top!!,pucker factor of a new brand! ,it's a great ride though,,

Hint: North Fork of the Clearwater
Have a little story about this lookout tower. During one of our visits, I climbed up the tower to get a better view and take some pictures. I was carrying my camera and just as I was almost to the top, somehow dropped my camera and could hear it bouncing off of the supports on it way down. Went down and found the camera and it appeared to have very little damage. Climbed back up and took these pictures. Didn't realize at the time the lens cover was not opening all the way up so that is why the top and bottom edge of the pictures are cut off. ![]() ![]() Once I solved the lens cover not opening all the way up, I used the camera for approximately one more year. On our next visit to the tower, I took this picture. That was the last picture the camera ever took. It quit working right after I took the picture. Katy said the camera was traumatized when it saw the lookout tower again. True story - Honest Crazy thing is if the camera would of been paying attention, it would of noticed the lower stairs missing so I was not going to be climbing the tower again anyway. In any case, had to buy a new camera after that trip. ![]() |
