Great RR and pics. One of the best places in the world to ride on two wheels!

Great roads, great scenery, and great beer. What more can you ask for?

Thanks for the report.

Keep on ridin'
George

Jim,
you Da Man. This report is awsome.

Earlier, some of you asked for a cost estimate:
Here's a rough tally:
Cost Estimate per day:
Bike Rental US$150 for a full size bike incl. insurance at Stefan Knopf’s. www.knopftours.com
No mileage limit, includes insurance etc. Stefan has used but well maintained bikes, mostly RTs, F650 and older K-75 bikes. Other places rent newer and faster bikes for many more $$$.
Hotels: See links from the Tourenfahrer site www.tourenfahrer.de (unfortunately, only in German) as well as the direct link for the hotel (in whatever language). Try Google or Bing Translate, works quite well. Hotel prices are 50 to 60 € or $65 to $80 per person based on double occupancy. Breakfast is typically included. Some have nice restaurants and we may be able to get a dinner included for a reasonable price also.
1 Euro = $1.30, 1 SFr = $1.06 (Dcember 2011)
Gas $45 to $60/day
Meals, drinks, snacks $40/day
Total about $300 to $350/day

YMMV

.. you have convinced me that I really MUST go visit my cousin while he is stationed in Germany .. I really miss that guy, like a brother to me .. really .. wonder if he'll miss me when I rent a bike?

.. and Happy New Year ..

About time to wind things up
Day 10

The driveway to our zimmer frei in Sigmarszell

He wasn't around the last time I was there

But my buddy was

Jürgen ready to lead us north

We headed northwest, about 20 km inland from the Bodensee. We took some of the same roads I took in '08, though I didn't realize it until I saw Jürgen's GPS tracks later.

Lunch was here

While we were eating Jürgen asked if we wanted to go to Niedereschach, the headquarters of Touratech.
Why not, we had the rest of the day to get to Heidelberg.

There is a photo of this rig in their catalog

A candy store for sure, but I think all we bought was tee shirts

Then on the road again, the last stage of the trip

The end was near, I knew we weren't far from congestion and the autobahn

Jim

Jürgen kept us on the back roads as long as he could, but eventually we were forced on the autobahn for the run into Heidelberg.

Stefan expects you to return with a full tank

It was nice to be back in familar surroundings

The cans are empty now
My GS had been around (view is of the bottom of the lid of the top box)

I had been wearing an older helmet of mine, I knew I wouldn't be bringing it back on the plane to save some
space in the overhead bin (ask Cathy sometime about all the stuff I brought back for her with the room I saved).
I wasn't sure if I would leave the boots. Then on the morning of the last day one of the zippers crapped out
and sealed their fate.
There was a rack of motorcyle clothing in Stefan's shop. He said to just leave them there, that perhaps
someone's gear would get lost at the airport and they could make use of them.

Stefan's cat visited
We had the evening and next morning to talk with some of the other travelers. The motorcycle vibes were
pretty intense around Stefan's place. It was a good thing we already had our fix.
Hats off to the couple with this bike. They traveled a lot lighter than I did.

They said they rode slower than normal the last couple of days

Jürgen

Marc

And me. We agreed it had been a pretty good ride
A last breakfast together at 7, Marc had the earliest flight of the day. Stefan himself drove our shuttle
(and saved us 5 euros each).

Jürgen would catch a train in Heidelberg to his destination, he had more to do in Germany.
Tarmac boarding for me, I think I was the last one on. There was a lot more leg room on this plane, and it
was only about 80% full. I had an empty seat next to me.

I didn't have a lot of time to make my connection in Chicago, but didn't get held up long in customs and
immigration and made it to my last gate with time to spare.
Cathy was waiting when I arrived in Springfield, she had thoughtfully brought along some beverage for the two
hour ride back home.
Marc beat me back to the states by a couple of hours, Jürgen returned about a week later.

So, Marc, Jim, others: When do we go again? Many more passes to sample (we missed all of France on this trip). Plus the northwestern corner of Italy - we could spend a week playing around there.

One more time, Jim: Your trip report rocks
Among the best I've seen on this forum.

Thanks for bringing back some memories. I did much of the same roads you did last July (link in my sig) and I'm itching to go back and do some more. The Dolomites in particular, since I didn't get a chance to do them last time. I'm shooting for a trip in 2013.

I liked the touch of adversity and the pleasure nevertheless. Enjoying a mountain pass, rain and fog makes fior a fun red especially with those great pictures.
