Descanso: Roadside Memorials

I've seen some amazing memorials on the side of the roads I travel. Almost all are tributes to those who died in that spot right on the side of the road. I did a search, and did not see a thread on this topic.

I often wonder, "What happened here?"

I thought I'd start with this photo. It's right outside of Saguaro National Park in Arizona. The little brick houses seem to be common in that part of the country. This one was well tended and had photos, candles, and a few little icons inside.

In Mexico, you can't ride a mile without seeing a shrine. Some of them are incredibly ornate, others are just simple and sad...

I drove that road in a blizzard a few months ago and remember how relieved I felt when I came up on the plow and tucked in behind him.

Northwestern Nevada...

Near Mono Lake in the eastern Sierra..

Just east of Sonora Pass in the Sierra...

Memorial to a fallen Husky rider on a trail in the Mendocino National Forest...

JQS Trail near Rifle, Colorado. My daughter's memorial. Audra died near that spot August 7th 2009 in a 4 wheeling mishap.
