Well, well, well. Mclaren introduce an almost-step nose.

And it still looks a brazillion times better than any other car out there too.

I know violence isn't the answer. I got it wrong on purpose.

It sure does. For those teams which didn't start with McLaren's nose height, it still amazes me that there's near unanimity on the step being a good idea aerodynamically. Presumably they had other options and decided that radical, ugly step was the best solution.

The step is needed why? A place for the driver to put his feet?

a step dictated by the rules: minimum height of the cockpit surround forward to a point and maximum height of the nose. hence a step.

designers want the nose as high as possible, rules say it can only be so high.

seems pretty straightforward.

frankly, the cars don't look all that bad to my eye.

YMMV

I'm going to mangle this, but I believe they say that with airplanes, the best design is usually the best-looking one.

In other words, there's something intuitive about good aerodynamic design. It's only a rule of thumb, of course, not a governing principle.

With that in mind, it's why I find the step-nose so jarring. It's not intuitively an elegant aero design. It looks like an ugly compromise. Assuming the regs stay the same next season (don't know if they do) I wonder if the step-nose will survive?

well in some cases it's more of a "scoop" than a step.

F1 cars aren't particularly "slippery", so there may be more benefits to be had from gaining the aero on having the nose where it is.

Understood, a point sometimes overlooked.
