that's nice but not quite looking to buy yet, maybe in a few years

What do y'all think of this? http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/40...45020679_zpid/ I seem to be finding a lot of places in Valrico and brandon, this too http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/80...44982093_zpid/.

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get down there to check places out before the move so my dad is looking around Tampa for me today. He's looking at the place in the link above and a few others in Valrico and Brandon. I didn't find much in Temple Terrace just yet.

I've also saw a place on a canal in Apollo Beach, worth taking a look?

The first one with the screened pool and 2.5 garage looks really good. Just make sure you get lawn care with the rent. That huge yard will need to be mowed most of the year.

Thanks, will ask about lawn care. If none I may be in the market for a small tractor (or maybe there's a mowing attachment for my Buell, it is rather tractor-like)

My parents looked at a bunch of houses for me and sent loads of great pictures. I think I'm very strongly leaning toward a place at Apollo beach. It looks to be 30-40 minutes from my office (18 miles, google says minimal traffic), places on navigable water aren't too expensive and trailers are ok there as well.

This is probably top choice for the combo of cheap and water
http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/90...44946671_zpid/

I also like these quite a lot, but they'd leave less $$$ left over to buy a boat or jetskis (I used to sail a bit and have done freestyle jet skis in the past-seems it'd be a shame not to get back into some sort of water sport in FL)

Any thoughts?

Sorry I didn't see this until today...

I'm 12 miles from where your office will be. I'm a life long resident of the Tampa area. I currently live near here.

Due to the real estate bubble, there's lots to pick from.

Personally, I'd pass on Apollo Beach unless being on or near the water is a big deal for you. The commute on I-75 can be a pain. Yards will be on the small side and condos will have limited garage space. If you're looking for something more rural, with some room for bikes, etc. look at the area north of I-4 and east of I-75. Super easy commute and zoning requires at least 1 acre lots.

If you have time, I'd be happy to show you around the area or provide suggestions (good area and places to avoid).

BTW, Temple Terrace is a really nice area and close to your office. You might have issues in some places with the trailer, depending on the HOA. Oh, and a very few places (mostly $$$) in Florida have banned motorcycles, thanks to loud pipes.

Edit:

Did some zillow searching...

Both of these are in a nice rural area (Valrico) next to a golf course.

Thanks very much! I think I'd like to try living on the water--its something I've never done before and I don't know that I'd actually buy a house on the water, but renting one for a couple of years might be fun. I can live without a ton of yard space, but definitely need room for the trailer. Most of the Apollo beach houses seem to be quite accommodating of trailers. Definitely smaller houses and lots for the money, but I can deal with that (no kids, so its just the wife and I).

Thanks for the searching, those look like really nice homes and a great option if I decide not to go with something on the water. I'm not sure if I'll be able to come down and look at places in person before I move down, but if I do I'd love to meet up and get your advice on the area. In any event, I'd love to meet up and maybe go for a ride once I move down.

How much of a pain would you guess I-75 would be? (note, I've commuted in and out of DC most of my life so my traffic tolerance is quite high ). Think I could make the commute in 45 min on the bike? Google says its a wash whether I go up 41 or 75 in terms of time.

I'm in the process of moving from Wesley Chapel where the traffic I deal with commuting to Brandon is awful. I'm moving to an area not too far from Apollo Beach so I"ll let you know how the commute goes after my first few weeks. I think Apollo beach would be great for you to try life on the water without being committed to buying. You can park your trailer there but like I said in the PM, I wouldn't leave anything in it. If it's out in the open, eventually whatever is inside will be stolen no matter where you live.

Cool, I'd be interested to hear how it goes! I will note your caution re leaving anything in the trailer. We just don't have such issues in DC/VA oddly enough--at least not my part of it.

I was in DC a couple of months ago between Lorton and Fredericksburg on I-95. It was a Sunday afternoon and the traffic volume was about the same as I-75 between Apollo Beach and Tampa during rush hour on a "good" day. In the case of a wreck, all bets are off.

Another option to waterfront would be along the Alafia River just north of Apollo Beach. Check listings in Riverview and Gibsonton (aka "Gibtown"). Google Gibtown for some interesting background information

Riverview?

You should also look in the Riverview area also. I have friends out there and it great that it's close enough to the city but also can be in the country. Yards are decent and plenty of room. There is the bay access also, depending on what kind you want (bay/gulf). Just a thought! Good luck and I'll be moving back to St. Pete this summer so I'm in the same boat

A couple things I didn't see mentioned here that are important - more for buying than renting:

1) Sinkholes in the area - lots up in pasco county where I live (Land O Lakes)
and
2) affected by #1 Cost of homeowners insurance - mine has got up so much that I'm now with the state run citizens...

I'd give up on Florida if it wasn't for the fact that I hate cold and non-riding weather!!

I beat the commute issues by being at work by 6 a.m. and leaving at 3 p.m. (work on MacDill when I'm not in the sandbox)..

Thanks, to be honest I'm only moving for the job, I love mountains and cold weather (no such thing as non-riding weather in my book!) and want to be in Colorado sooner or later

I'm just renting so not too worried about insurance and sink holes :)

Gibtown does seem quite interesting. So far though I haven't seen too much of interest in that area or Riverview (with water access), but probably not a lot of folks are listing their houses right before Christmas. I'll have another look on Jan. 2nd or so, then grab whatever looks best at that time.

Gibsonton is pretty sketchy. AVOID. Waterfront with a boat lift would be cool. Excellent snook, trout and redfish on the flats and in the creeks just south of you. Grouper, Snapper and mackerel out in the ship channel. There are always a few good deals on boats on craig's list if you know what is what. You would want to get renters and flood insurance for your household contents if on the water. I would call a Tampa Insurance agent beforehand for cost.

Thanks. I just got back to DC after driving the bikes down. I looked at a bunch of houses and have got an application in now for a waterfront house in Apollo Beach. Its a little smaller and more basic than would have been ideal, but was tidy, had great water access and was quite inexpensive so it'll do for now. I'll check on renter's insurance, but not too stressed over it as the house is up a hill a bit from the water and set higher than most in AB. I'll see if I can find out when it last flooded (if ever) to see what the chances are. If a hurricane is coming I can always toss the bikes in the trailer and make for high ground

I should be moved in by the end of the month and will start shopping for a boat right away. I don't fish, but I'm sure I'll have friends/visitors who will come over and try their hand at it. Maybe I'll take it up, but probably not

I'm thinking about a bowrider or small cuddy cabin in the 18-24' range. Something that could pull a skier, wakeboard or tube ok and have enough room for half a dozen folks to go out. Haven't ruled out a sailboat either and will definitely get a sailboat at some point in life (I love taking my dad's hobie out on the gulf and was in a small sailing club in school for a couple of years), but for now I think a motor boat might suit me better. I started a boat thread in shiny things

How rough is the bay typically? I'd love to be able to motor over to whatever waterfront restaurants are along tampa and st pete.

Awesome! I am in the process of moving down from just north of Tampa to a little south of where you will be (Ruskin). The bay is usually pretty calm and you will have great access to all kinds of water fun from AB. I suggest getting something at least 19 feet so you can go out to Egmont Key and other cool points in the gulf/ICW, it can get pretty choppy in the channel. Boating around Tampa and Clearwater/St Pete you have to deal with a lot of shallow water so get yourself a good GPS. Welcome to Florida.
