Hey, if you're serious, I'll do it. I see you're in CA though.

Too far away.

Find yourself a bike and start tinkering. Do easy stuff like cutting up fenders, swapping bars, gutting exhaust cans, painting stuff. You can do a ton of stuff to a bike without spending much of anything. A buddy just took a grandma sportster and made it pretty cool without spending a dime.

I've coined a new element: leftnuttium. Unlike unobtanium, which is things not able to be obtained by mortals for mere cash, leftnuttium is things which are obtainable and are worth the expense of some very dear flesh.

OK, so 1,200 for a frame, tank, front end, and wheels that are 50 years old? What am I missing here? I mean, yeah, it's cool, but $1,200?

After noticing your avatar I suggest you trade your cow for magic beans.

Man, if that doesn't get you fired up you might not be ready for a chopper. I bet you could get that guy down to $800 a couple days before Christmas and all. Maybe I'm used to California prices, but....it's an old Trumpet for dirt cheap!!!

Oh, no, it got me fired up all right, the problem is that I don't have $1,200 to spare on that.

So let's say I got this frame; would it fit only a Triumph engine, or could something else go in there?

there are Triumph guys that would angrily toss their oxygen tanks aside and try to shiv you with a letter opener for putting anything but a Triumph engine in there.

You can get an eBay frame for 50 bucks or find one in the trade papers in PA for free or barter.
If you want to build a chopper, it'll need to actually be chopped. That means changing the angle of the steering head. Serious business, that. Screw up a cheap or free frame and go from there. There are chop tutorials all over the intarwebz.

The aforementioned Suzuki, Honda Shadow, and other asian cruisers and UJM types are good cheap victims.

I'd put an ad in the paper and barter piano lessons. Motorcycle guys have kids that learn piano and most of us have collections of all kinds of crap. You might luck out and get a mentor from the deal too.

Go here:

Chopper Underground

A lot more metric and non-typical "chopper" stuff going on there. Look for an old CB or XS, have fun.

LarryBoy's hobby is putting stuff where it doesn't belong.
