Looking for a Ninja

Searching the salvage sales for an EX650 for a dirt franken-bike project. Wonder what to expect for auction sale prices. Does anyone have an idea about how much these bikes bring at auction with salvage titles?

I found an 07 EX650A with moderate damage to the external stuff but the core parts appear OK. No idea of miles ridden but could be a fair amount based on the year. Does not look like the auction yard (Coparts) will make any effort to start it and get the mileage.

I paid $2000 for one with 18 miles on it, clean title, and a few minor scratches on one fairing. It seems like ones with salvage titles and minor damage fetch 1500 or less. Good luck with the build. I intend to make big progress on mine next week.

Wow that's a great deal. How did you locate it? I shop craigslist alot but most bikes are pretty new and hi priced. I see a bunch of EX250's around NM, AZ and CO.

Just saw an 08 EX650R go in Nevada for $1400. Had unknown miles and light damage, salvage title.

I'm killing time now looking into front suspension. Would like to do YZ/RM/KX forks and maybe the ZX10R Kawi triples to get close to the correct for OD for USD fork legs. The ZX10R should be 50mm top and 54 bottom. Did a rough measure on my KTM250SX triples and found 55mm top and 60mm bottom for the fork leg mounting. I assume that means I need to go earlier models to get smaller OD's forks.

Paperwork

New issue just came up. Seems NM has very strict rules about re-sale of salvage title vehicles. Wonder if others have run into this.

I did find a possible option, there are provisions for "custom built" vehicles that may allow one to get a proper title after filling out some forms and getting an inspection. I did this once for a trailer and had no problems but the whole street legal dirtbike thing has always been a problem here.

Got one.

Come down to Las Cruces and you can ride mine. I think I have 1200 bucks in it total. Bought a wrecked 2008 versys w/850 miles for 400.00, new forks 300, tank 55, radiator 100, ninja frame 99 + 100 to ship, set of advmonster lights 100. a few small incidentals, one holiday weekend and a couple twelve packs later I ended up with this. Fun as hell.

Cool can't wait.

Have you registered it yet? Not sure how that is going to go over at MVD if it has a salvage title.

I found some '03 YZ forks but they are some too big for the ZX10R triple clamps I had planned on. Maybe I can press out the EX650R stem and put it into a YZ triple.

'03 YZ forks Dims:
Upper Clamp diameter: 54mm
Lower Clamp diameter: 58.5mm
Sliding shaft diameter: 46mm
Axle side one: 24mm
Axle side two: 20mm

How is the snow down there, has it thawed out yet. I'm thinking of going down to Socorro on Fri or Sat.

Where on earth are you all finding these good deals?
CoPart auctions?
I guess it's a bad time of year to find a crashed Ninja here, as there are none, and all the motorcycle parts yards have are cruiser bikes. Those that I visited didn't even know where I might find a buggered up Ninja/Versys.

I've been watching the online auctions this week and have not seen any great deals. Did notice the GSXs and ZXs are really hot. Only a few ninja's out there. One going tomorrow in OK I'm going to watch if I get a chance.

Great link

That's a cool search site. I could buy bikes twice as fast if my bank account could keep up.

I won hi bid on a copart auction but the seller had a minimum bid that was higher, but no way to know ahead of time. Then it just showed up as re-listed for sale next week. WTF.

what broker are you using?
Sucks about the auction. I guess that's one major problem with CoPart.

Not using a broker, you can sign up without any broker. Only need one in some states according to local rules. Several even allow you to bid on items with titles. Seems like the starting bid should be set at some number if the seller wants to limit the price.
