I'd have done the same thing but the young guy ran for cover.

the older guy manned up and seemed to stuff a rag over what? air intake?

that was a scary situation that they luckily defused.

The kid went after it with a rag that it sucked right in.

The old man knew to put something over the intake that wouldn't get sucked in (looked like a 2x4). That slowed it down a little and then he put the rag over that.

On marine diesels the solution is to close the fuel valve. Absent of a fuel shutoff the only solution is to cut off the air supply.

Dunno but a 353 Deeeee-troit maxes out at 2900, IIRC. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it was well over that.

The one I'm most familiar with had an emergency shut off which was basically an internal 'flap' that slapped down over the blower intake. Never needed to use it.

Let me tell you as a young lad it ain't easy sneaking in late at night with a Deeeeetroit under the hood of your F250 pickum up truck. Had to do some mighty creative coasting after shutting it down a half mile away. Sucked if you just barely ran short. It meant firing it up again right in the driveway.
