Wait (I'm slow) does BRZ stand for "breeze"?

I went with a VW Jetta GTI and love it. The turbo really puts a smile on my face and the 54 mpg to work keeps me happy.

$26k?

Nice try, subaru- but there's so many better things I could buy for that much money.

My new VW Jetta TDI was just 25500 after discounts.

And I'm getting 54 mpg on my 90 mile a day drive.

we have a jetta tdi, so I'm not hating, but that's a pretty bad comparison; there's no way the relatively porky, fwd jetta is going to handle nearly as nice, given this thing is being compared (very favorably) to miatas.

I want to like it, but don't understand how a direct injected 2 liter, 2500#, sports car gets about the same MPG as my heavy and square Outback wagon.
Looks like most of the other asian coupes- 240z, Tiberon, Genesis Coupe, Eclipse. Then there are the fake fender vents and the Prius tires .
Still want to see one in person, but I'm probably going to order a Mustang GT this fall.

obvious answers are probably higher strung engine and gearing.

Hey, look at the bright side- you only had to pay $10k extra to keep up with a ford fiesta. Hope that VW "quality" doesn't bite you in the ass before you can earn back that $10k with your extra 14mpg.

Fug. You're one of those guys who wants to compare a stripped out version... As i said before, if you're looking for the cheapest car to own, find the cheapest small car you can, preferably used. Anyone buying a tdi isn't looking for that (unless they're an idiot). We got the jetta tdi for my wife because it was a nice car that she liked, wanted to drive, AND it got good mileage. She wasn't going to end upwith a stripped out anything at $14k because it didn't have the amenities she wanted (the closest fiesta is around $20k, and frankly it doesn't feel like nearly as nice a car, even accounting for the price difference (we got our jetta tdi for $25k, with auto, sunroof, and upgraded wheels)).

Two Hearted ain't free ya know.

Somewhere, they crossed the point that makes me pause and think, "that's a lot of money to pay for something that I can't fit all my bicycle shit in and is even easier to put in the ditch than a WRX."

oh, you wanted to close the rear hatch.

give it a couple of years, then you can buy a used one for cheap.

just beat all the ditch dents out and you'll be ready to go.

Bingo. I got a nice loaded car that can get out of its own way, gets awesome mileage and has a 6 speed manual.

If you're cross-shopping a TDI with a BRZ, you might be missing the point...

I sat in one at a car show and liked the fit reasonably well- I'm 5'11. I'm looking at new cars and the BRZ is on my short list. It they had an STi or turbo'd version out yet, it would probably be my short list, but those still at the maybe later stage...
