Just remember that if your rig is unridable without a steering dampner and your far from home and your dampner quits dampning how are you gonna get home??.The VW units are so cheap that I bought a 2nd one and stuffed it behind the sidecar seat...

Good Idea.....

I'm gonna do that, and that thought crossed my mind.

Sands I've been following your thread here and congrats on getting the hack hooked up and running down the road.

I will be doing the same thing here in a couple weeks. My new to me hack will arrive, can't wait.

When Northwestrider said the VW one is cheap, what are you guys refering to, I must have missed that part. Is it your damper?

Yep

Yep, that is what he is referring to. I was lucky, when I bought my car, it had everything I needed to put it together pretty much. I did adapt some of the parts. and it came with a steering damper. I do want to get a spare, like he said, if it goes out, it becomes unrideable again, good spare part to carry. I just got back from a 120 mile little trip. One thing I can say, it does require a good bit more steering input, my arms are tired. I want to ride it some more today, but I am thinking about driving over to see a sick friend, I am pretty tired, but a good day of riding. And I have all the electrical done......

VW Jetta steering dampner.I took mine off one day when I was fighting some MAJOR handleing issues to see if the dampner was making the rig hard to steer.I made it less than a mile from work,I hit about 35mph and when I let off the throttle the handlebars whipped out of my hands and off in to a field I went.I was standing ankle deep in mud putting my dampner back on !!!

Ya, I need to buy a new one for my bike. I was able to induce a low speed wobble the other day with the damper. It has never leaked but must be getting tired. Luckily I also have a steering head friction damper so I just snug it up a bit more.

It's all good.

This pic says it all.......

Took a little 500 mile overnite trip to Mena, Ar, and my sweet friend just loved it.....

Mena Mountaintop Cabins are one of the best places to stay in Mean, Ar.

Still need to do a few things to wrap it up, she loved the ride, it was comfortable. Steering effort was pretty high in some of the tight curves, but once I learn a little better technique, I'll be better. Great ride overall......

When SWMBO smiles the world is a happy place!
You may want to pick up a copy of the "Yellow Book", Driving a Sidecar Outfit by David Hough. Lots of instruction on riding technique, and setup.
I can see a trail reduction device in your future.......

What I see.....................

What I really see is a Gold Wing 1800 in my future, has everything I need on it already except a 5* rake triple tree. But for now, what I have is paid for, and this season it's my ride.

Once you get it, you cant just let it sit......you will have to get out there and start messing with it. Now that mine is hooked up, I need a charging point for cellphone over there, and a cup holder. That is from the chief occupant orders, well nicely asking

Just scored me some like new

Just scored some like new stock exhaust pipes. So next week I have front fender chrome to install, and remove the old strait shot pipes and put on the new stock ones. My old pipes are so loud......Change the oil, and do a little adjusting on the car's angle to the bike......the inside of the car sags a little toward the bike, nothing loosened up, it was just that way when I finished... then recheck the alignment again. all is good.

Messed with the ride all day...

Well, I don't know if anyone really follows this, but today was really busy. I put on the new exhaust......then addressed the wiring issues that I needed to clean up. Really satified with that, everything came together in the end. Oh, yeah......the stock horn sounded like a sick duck quacking. I got a "Bad Boy" air horn a couple of years ago and just got around to putting it on.......I can now wake the dead......make old men piss thierselves. This dude is LOUD. So I went from loud pipes to quiet ones, and went from a quiet horn to a loud one....... And now all I have to do is wipe the bike down and ride it tomorrow.
