good news on ABK, I will look into that option. the thing is, you can get from ABK to RU, but I guess if you do that, & not return to GEO you may end up on their shit list. Not a biggie, if you dont plan to return, but I go to GEO pretty often

I also use a visa agency for russia. yes, its not the cheapest, but I like it, because they do all the work. I just send them my passport & some money, & get the visa back.

I dont think there is a transit option for RU

Border Crossing Point GEO -RUS at Verkhniy Lars is open for non-CSI citizens too; I crossed it this morning with a valid russian visa. No more then 30' to wait.

Beside 20 km. from Gadauri (GEO) to north, the road is good.

Referring to Abkazia, I can confirm that once you enter from Georgia you won't be allow to go back.

Experiences from other travelers and Abkhazian Consul are not confirming this.

If I look logicaly:
Abkhazians will let you trough if you have their visa/entry permit, as for a Georgia you've formaly never even left their country since they consider Abkhazia part of Georgia. Problem would be if you enter from Russia to Abkhazia. This would be to Georgia officials as you illegaly entered Georgia. And if you go from Georgia to Abkhazia and leave trough Russia you would illegaly exit the Georgia.
So best logical and I think the best chance is to enter/leave Abkh. from Georgia. If they let you in, I think they should let you out.

My opinion.

Hi, we're back from a trip around the Black Sea (11.300 km, 21 countries), and, as others, we had no problem for the border crossing between Georgia and Russia.
We didn't try it through Abkazia, what I've read about it is not so good.

@rok1679: we crossed the border at Vale (not the one on the coast). It was ok, and quite fast.
About Abkhazia, the belgian consul in Tbilissi wrote me that you can't enter Abkhazia (or South Ossetia also) from Georgia. On the other hand, it's easy to enter Abkhazia from Russia, but if you do so, and then go to Georgia, georgian autorities can put you in jail for 5 years.
This guy, the consul, knows what he's talking about. It's the only "official" who told me that the Kazbegi/Vladikavkaz border was open (it was a few months ago).
I think that if you really want to ride Abkhazia and Georgia, you have to do Georgia first, then Russia, then Abkhazia, then Russia again.
Hope this will help

Hi Eric
we spent almost 5 days in Georgia (1 day in Svaneti, Mestia, Ushguli, 2 days in Tbilissi, 1 day on the road, military road). It's definitly not enough, we wanted to visit the eastern part, near the Azerbaijan border, and also the Black Sea coast, but we didn't had time, we had to move on to stay in our timing. Still a lot of things to see. It's a good reason to go there one more time

Tbilissi is very cool and nice (we met nice people there, it helps). And Ushguli also, but you'll have to ride 44 km of dirt tracks to get there. But it's worth it.

I've decided to go counterclockwise around the black sea, as then I can go to abkhazia after georgia, with no worries.

Sorry for being late.

No I didn't go to abkazia neither from Russia nor from Georgia.

During my stay in Kazbegi I met a young lady working for a big travel agency in Tbilisi - she confirmed me that once you enter in Abkazia from Georgia you won't be allowed to be back to Georgia.

Now I see you have modify your plan – I do believe it’s a safe compromise.

Have a nice trip!

hi all
If you're still planning a trip to Georgia feel free to ask the questions you have. I'll put this thread on my watch list and try to answer them.

Cool, Thanks!
Ive been there a few times over the last couple years, its a wonderful country!
I've stayed in Tlibisi several nights, at hotels & at a hostel. Biggest concern for me is safe bike parking, the hostel seemed ok, the hotel didnt have real secure parking, but I had no problems.
I'll be there again in a few weeks, what hotel would you suggest? I like inexpensive, safe parking & wifi :)

Are they doing the Batumi bike fest again this year? If so, what are the dates? I cant find any info on it

Thanks, Doug

Maybe we can meet up for a drink?

rtwdoug, Bike safety here is more of a concern about somebody messing with the bike (mainly when making pics) rather then matter of theft. I don't happen to use any hotels here, so I cant advice you any right now. Maybe I'll have some info later these days.

The Extreme Sports Federation is planning to make an event in 19-22.07.2012. There is no detailed info atm, but I suppose they'll make it in Batumi again.
