Funny how we're talking "Not dead yet" tee's as I was eye-balling a shirt I thought would have been funny to bring to you.

I know graphic designs will cut into the fund raising aspect of things, I'm fine with something as simple as the above example.

New M/C Shop Nearby

For those of you who are coming from the south and will be passing through Winsted, CT on Rt. 8, stop in at Redline Powersports, 70 South Main Street. You can't miss it coming off of Rt. 8, its right in front of you. One of our own, Shannon Frye, has opened a bike shop. If you remember from last year, Shannon helped me do pre-reg at Prospect Mountain under Ross's canopy. Currently she's stocking some really great riding gear(in our sizes!), some general parts, plugs, fluids, consignment bikes, and has a full-time service tech.

Mostly okay. Check with us at the Start. There is one spot where we might need to make you a bypass, if the town does not complete culvert repairs by the day of the event.

snow

So yesterday (3/08/2012) Rusty Rocket came by with his truck and picked up me & my little bike. He trucked us up to the "Northern Loop" portion of the route to pre-ride since Marrivermaz had spotted some mileage discrepancies on his computer check (using Google Maps).

A lot of the seasonally un-maintained dirt roads up there still had hefty snow cover. Ones that got a lot of snowmobile traffic and were packed down to ice, we could ride. The packed-down layer was thin, and the 60 degree weather softened both the icy layer and the dirt road beneath it, so we could get a little bite if we were careful. On other segments that didn't go anywhere for the sleds, like a connector between a residential area and a main road on the other end, the undisturbed snow was too deep and heavy and soft for us to get through.

In one case there was about a half mile un-plowed section between the last house on one end, and the next house coming from the other end. There was a snowmobile track but there had not been enough traffic to pack down the snow. We decided to churn our way through. It was a time-consuming, sweaty grind. I was churning the rear and footing it pretty much the whole time, making maybe 1 or 2 mph. I had to stop and rest. It sure was good to see that next house come into view. The guy was outside, probably wondering what the noise was. I beeped at him and he waved.

Oh yeah, and did I also mention it was MUD SEASON? Even the plowed dirt roads were tough, with soft ruts from 4-wheeled traffic. For a bigger bike like a 1200GS they would have been hero sections. We were glad we were on small to mid sized thumpers, me on an XT-225 and Rusty on a KTM, 400 I think. We both have 650s but were glad we weren't on them.

We did find a mileage error. When I moved a reset, I had miscalculated.
