I a local add there's a A.J.S. for sale. The Add just says A.J.S. 500CC in parts.

I know that if I am going to look, that I WILL buy it, so to save myself, I am looking for information not to buy it, but information is pretty hard to find.

Pretty sure it's a post war A.J.S., but no more info on the bike unfortunately. It's too far away to just go and have a look.

Now: How good/bad is the reputation of A.J.S.? How's the reliability? I already noticed that part supply is doable, and even kind of affordable. What are the things to look out for? It's in parts so I won't be able to start it (engine is not in parts by the way). I live in a crowded place, I am not looking for a racer, but is it sort of able to handle itself in modern traffic?

Pre unit AJS/Matchless machines are lovely bikes. The 350 singles are desperately slow though.

We need more information on the year/model though

Parts are plentiful and cheap.

Thanx!

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I may try to make it. I live in Richmond and it would make a nice ride. My vintage bike isn't ready, but I can ride my new Bonneville.

That was exactly what I would do with it.

I can afford the bike, I can't afford a money pit. I still find it very hard to find decent information onn the bike, although most sources seem to say it's very reliable. Those sources however mostly prefer the 350 (without giving a reason). I am pretty sure the 350 is too slow for where I live.

These machines are well proven so I wouldn't worry about reliability on a well sorted machine, obviously you have no idea of the history or condition of this machine.

If you decide not to buy it I'd be very interested in buying it. Drop me a line if you decide not to go with it.

I finally got the guy on the phone. It's far form complete, he bought it in crates 10 years ago and never did anything with it. For instance: 1 of the wheels is missing, but he doesn't even know if it's the front or back wheel.....

I'm going to take a look next Thursday.
