Hi PP... Sorry I missed your question. I would say 2/3's of the time I find the old photo and bring it with me. The rest of the time I come across the image afterwards, and it usually is not a perfect match with the photo already taken. But close enough. But hey, I can always return! Always looking for excuses "to get out there".

Here's an example of coming across the old pic after taking the new pic.

If I had the pic above with me, I would have been more to the right and would have directed the viewfinder more to the NW. See the hump to the far left on the distant ridgeline? It should be more towards the center of the pic. Today...


The train depot at the community of Sunset, up Four Mile Canyon west of Boulder, where tracks from the canyon would link with tracks coming over the Switzerland Trail (A naming ploy to encourage touring passengers). In 1884...


Now, even if you bring the old pic like I did with the above, and "treasure hunt" the location of the photographer back then, it still can be a challenge. In this pic, there was no place to get slightly higher behind me! Nevertheless, what a diff...

Very cool thread! I graduated high school in Stevensville, Montana (supposedly the first town in Montana). I will have to look up some olds pics and take some matching shots next time I'm home.
