A brief intro

Just read this thread tonight and watched a few video clips. Seems somewhat rough, imo. Last year I purchased my new bike, and I debated for some time about what to get. Eventually settled on a Kawasaki Versys as I figured most my riding would be on road - but I love trails though I have never ridden bikes on trails, only ridden 4 wheelers on ATV trails.

I plan to attend one of your meetings and get better acquainted. One of my concerns is my age.
I know 8 very nice persons who all call me "Grandpa". :))

Welcome Gene. Post up a pic of the new Kaw if you'd like...

I'm getting my dad (at almost 69) interested in dual sport.

Welcome Gene, we could "modify" your Versys to do gravel just fine... Great bike, I would love to find one cheap and put a 19" front wheel on it.
You can send me your email address if you want added to the list. We have over 60 on the list as of this week. Our average age is 50+. I too am a grandpa.

You've lost some weight Dave...

Are those MSR bottles by the headlight.

Speaking of weight...I weighed my bikes on the bathroom scale yesterday.

KLX:
134 F
161 R
295 Total

TE
162 F
210 R
372 Total (with 26lbs of tools/tubes/etc)
346 w/o tools

Had to lose some weight from somewhere.

Yep, they are MSR bottles mounted to a rack that the PO built, pretty slick.

Have you sold the KLR Dave? Oops, never mind I see it listed as sold in your signature. ;)

It was actually an even trade, but yes, the old girl is exploring the back roads of Michigan now.

Ohio Woods Riders are holding the 3rd Annual Cabin Fever Road Enduro on April 29th, 2012. Rain or Shine.
This one is perfect for your "non-off-road-riding" buddies.
You can ride ANY licensed motorcycle that you like.
This ride is welcome to all dual sport bikes, legal enduro bikes, and any legal bike that you can ride gravel on.
Bring your vintage bike, side-car, or unique machines if you have one!

There is NO OFF ROAD on this event.
We'll do 130 miles of scenic, and sometimes tight-n-twisty gravel.

There will be secret checkpoints along the route to check your timecard.

We'll have a few classes to sort out the "fast guys":.

Novice, Intermediate, and Expert

We'll be giving out awards for the top 3 in each class, and for the "Overall"
There may be some of our "unusual" awards as well....

We'll feed you lunch after the ride.

No Timekeeping Enduro Computers Allowed this year. Bring your watch and a bike with an odometer.

Gas stop will be at approx 70 miles.

NEW START LOCATION THIS YEAR !
5715 East pike, Zanesville, Oh 43701
(parking lot and festival grounds of the Rushing Wind Biker church along I-70)

Free camping Saturday night, lots of food close by.

I'll repost here the emailed info about "George's Ride"...

George is having his ride on Sat Apr 21st.
We can NOT handle a large group for safety reasons. So we decided to supply a GPS route and you can pick the riders that meet your style from the list.
Keep the group size 4 - 6 for easiest management. Meet and start at the the Rocky Fork Lake boat dock.
Smaller bikes and V-Stroms with street tires group together. This is NOT an AMA or sanctioned ride. You are on your own, so have a riding buddy that will help you fix a flat, share some water or loan you some gas.

It is lots of gravel. Mostly old county roads.
A VStrom can do it fine, but will be slower than a lighter bike with knobbies.
I would rate it a 4 - 8 depending on speed ridden.

Agree with Ray's assessment. I have seen all kinds of bikes ridden on this route including a ural sidecar.

ALL RIDERS- Please bring your better judgment and courtesy to this ride.

Last fall on this route, one rider cut diagonally across a farmer's field at a corner. Not just a little, but about 500 feet worth. If that sounds like a cool idea to you, do the rest of us a favor & stay home. Some of us like to return to the area to ride again, so don't spoil it for us. Stay on the roads and don't make a lot of noise. Don't wear out our welcome.

There is lots of loose gravel on this route. If you love to twist the throttle and roost rocks behind you, please form your own riding group of like-minded folks. Then you can take turns roosting each other and the rest of us in other groups can avoid bruises and enjoy our day.

Here's a screenshot of the route to give a rough idea of where it runs. Use Hillsboro and Portsmouth as reference points. PM me or Ray if you need the .gpx file that you can open in Google Earth. The route is ~140 miles beginning and ending at the Rocky Fork Lake boat dock. Post up if you're looking for someone to ride with.

Bob
