LOL... Okay! But it gets even better if he gets the rebate... $49.99 for that card.

I don't know if pci express 3.0 will run in the computer, so maybe this other one would be better.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=G458-0610

this is the computer I am running right now, and i do realize i would have to upgrade the power supply.

All PCI Express x16 connections are compatible. Whether it's 1.0, 2.0, 2.1, or 3.0 (the major versions), they all have the same phsyical connection and will work together. The only difference is in data transfer methods, and the connection will run at the speed of the slowest item, whether that's the motherboard or graphics card.

Having said that, either card you listed will work. The 640 will work better, but it is $30 more. It's really your call. It looks like the 640 is a great bang for your buck.

Tom's Hardware has graphic card rankings based on performance and also price. I can't seem to find what I'm looking for right now, but I know furgal has it. Maybe he'll post here or you can catch him in TS. We're both computer nerds and enjoy talking about them quite a bit lol

Edit: I see Jane beat me too it. Got the Tom's links I was looking for and a good summary. I'd say for the price, the 640 you listed would be fine. If you can go a little higher, you can get more performance for just a tad more.

After rebate, the 6670 is $50 as well. But the whole "we'll give you $20 whenever we get around to it" thing was never my cup of tea. I try to ignore rebates when comparing cards.

Edited my earlier suggestions accordingly.

FWIW:

One thing to note with nVidia cards - the 2nd digit is the "performance level" and the first digit is the series; similar to BMW cars where the first digit is the series and the 2nd digit is the engine line.

For example: a 285 is about the same speed as a 640 because the 8 was the fastest of the 2 series - the 4 is one of the slowest of the 6 series. What you do get with the 6 series is better power consumption (less) and less noise.

In the higher end cards for example, a 560 is significantly faster than a 650 - even though it is older.
With the slower cards - the newer models are *usually* better.

ATI cards are usually cheaper for cards with similar benchmark numbers; that said I've had so many issues with ATI Catalyst drivers over the years I avoid them when I can (the irony being I went to school with one of the guys that wrote the original Mach ATI drivers).

Here is another Benchmark site to give you an idea of what cards fit where:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html
Like with any benchmark there is fluctuation depending on what exactly is doing what (one card may be faster doing A but slower doing B) - but it gives you the general idea of where cards fit in the overall picture (consider the ratio as opposed to the exact number)

.

Sam: one last thing about the 640 card.. here's an info sheet on it - the "value" charts are always interesting in looking at similar cards:

I'm in the Warplanes beta too, but I haven't played it in quite a while because it takes way too long to get a match, and it's impossible to get a full match.

if I do buy a new video card along with a Power supply I will be looking to keep the costs down, so that means no top of the line cards. I probably will not be looking at any card that costs over 100 right now as there are other places to spend money that come first, like keeping the wife happy and safe.
