Lost and loving it

The man: My name is Darin. 23 years old, avid motorcyclist, outdoorsman, mechanic, former soldier and future college student. After being honorably discharged from the Army, I find myself with 6 months of open space, before college starts in the fall.

The mule: Its ugly, its slow, its unbelievably reliable. This one has an IMS gas tank, a bigger seat, a rack from Happy Trails, some hacked up pelican boxes I had, an led headlight, and a race light frame with Boatman conversion mounts.

The route: What route? The plan is the head west out of Atlanta, Georgia, to Mexico. Head south, through Mexico, to Panama before tuning back north. Find a boat to Baja and cross back into the United States through California. From there, head as far north as time allows before turning back towards Atlanta, Georgia. That's the plan for now. I have a notoriously bad sense of direction so it helps to plan as I go. I'm doing as much free camping along the way as possible. The less money spent on lodging means more money for gas and food, right?

Some places to see-
Copper Canyon
Ruins in Mexico
Panama Canal
Las Vegas
New Orleans
Moab, Utah
Pikes Peak
Back Country Discovery Route, Oregon
Overland Expo in Arizona
As many National Parks as possible
Anything else I find along the way

Days 1, 2 and 3

Thanks guys. I'm currently in Texas on my way to Big Bend. I'm a little over a week behind with the writing and still have to catch up with New Orleans, and a few other places. I definitely have work on the photo taking.

Rich H2: I might stop by the Grand Canyon, but having seen it before, it's low on the list. Alaska is a possibility. My grandparents are headed up in an rv this summer, so I might meet them along the way somewhere. What's the Million Dollar Mile? I'm getting bunch of different results when I look it up.

Days 1, 2, and 3

After much hurried, last minute preparations I was finally on the road. I headed south, away from Atlanta, onto new places and people. Sputtering down twisting back roads I saw much of the old South I had come to love. The old antebellum homes, the weathered barns with rusting tin roofs, the oak and pecan trees, and the small and quiet towns that I hadn't seen in a long time. That first night I stopped along the Georgia/Alabama state line at a Corps of Engineers site. The campground was empty, and apart from a few old men fishing on the river, I had the whole place to myself.

Waking up with the sun and eager to go, I rode west. After a long day on the road, I pulled into a small campground next to a lake. Despite being close to a busy road, it wasn't a bad place to camp for the night. Tired from travelling, I crawled into the sleeping bag early. Around midnight I jumped up to the sounds of people yelling and hurried foot steps. Slowly looking out from my tent, I found an entire boy scout pack descending on the campground. Groggy the next morning, I wasted no time taking off from what was now a very busy city of tents.

Onto New Orleans!
