Kiwi Safari Team to Dakar 2015

Hiya Kiwi's.

My bike is just about ready to get tucked away in it's travel case for the big voyage to Buenos Aires, Argentina for Dakar 2015. Here's a taster of what's available in my other thread:

I've been running a thread in the Oz section for a while (before you ask, because that's where the sponsors are and truckloads of people that have bought my fund raising Tee Shirts).
JayBo's journey to the Dakar
Pop in for a look.
The graphics haven't been done yet ... it will be much "louder" as a Kiwi bike entry! (It was a bit "subdued" in the Safari last year).

Looks like the NZ Herald want to do an interview or something. They've been in touch with my Mum in Huntly. Funny thing - they asked her if I had any sponsors. She replied "I don't think so". I can confirm for them that I don't have any NZ based sponsors. I had really thought that Air NZ would jump given that Argentina is pretty passionate about rugby, but they turned me down pretty quickly. I liked the idea of the rally bike in the new AirNZ livery too.
Even my Tee Shirt sales were bought by more family members in NZ than ADVRiders.

I did a phone interview with a media officer in Paris a couple of weekends ago. I was chilling out in the evening at a farm-stay chalet that my cycling team had hired for a 5 Stage road-race and my mobile rang. The number came up +33 ... and I thought "where the hell is that?". My team mates were cool ... complete disinterest.

Ciao
JayBo

So the Herald got back to my Mum and told her that there is too much cricket and tennis at that time of year so they won't have any interest in Dakar. They also said that maybe if I'd got hold of them earlier they'd have sorted something out, maybe even some sponsorship. So why didn't they reply to my email and the media release I sent them through their website many months ago? They also said that maybe they'd do a feature afterwards depending on how I do. Well, maybe I'll talk to them ... maybe they'll be told to ... something else entirely.

I've been pretty staggered recently at the number of people I've come across that have never heard of the Dakar Rally (or even the Paris Dakar Rally, despite what Charlie Boorman did for its profile). Or is it just that people are afraid I'll hit them up, so claim to know nothing?

On the flip side though, I've also been staggered at the support I've had, the messages of encouragement and some really generous individuals.

All the best for the Race. I guess I won't be buying the Herald for news on the Dakar. You would think they would jump at the chance of following something like this, especially with the kiwi flag being flown. Some people live in very small worlds...

Hard to compete with tennis and cricket ... there's probably a golf game or two on about then too I'm guessing. They probably figure motorbike riders can't read anyway.

I approved the final proof of the bike's graphics scheme today. I think Kiwi's will like it.

Sure will!

I love the stylised NZ flag too. I can't wait to see the graphics on the bike - they always look better on the bike than on the proof sheet.

Hi John

Thanks Koos.
I don't think anyone is still awake in NZ. Except for the odd bit of really Kiwi stuff (like if I bump into the NZ Ambassador for Argentina, if there is one, or a bunch of Kiwi's pop out of the crowd for a photo) I'll probably try and update the thread in the Aussie Forum. That's where my sponsors are, except for 3 or 4 Tee shirts that sold to NZ.
Cheers
John B

Got a link? I'd be keen to follow.

If your bike was made of jewellery I could throw a bit your way next time haha

Good luck dude!
