I'm still trying to swing things so that I can tag along with you this coming weekend for at least part of the ride (even if I can't join the 'offical ride'). I call you in a couple of days to discuss

Car in wrong motorway lane hits motorbike A motorcyclist on an Auckland motorway has been hit head-on by a car travelling in the wrong direction. The driver carried on after the crash on the Southern Motorway at Otahuhu about 1am on Friday, but he struck a tree on a south-bound onramp. Police, in a statement, said they received several calls from alarmed motorists before and after the crash, reporting a vehicle travelling north at speed in the southbound lanes. The 38-year-old motorcyclist suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to Middlemore Hospital. Police were speaking to the driver of the car.

Crash man loses leg A motorcyclist has lost his leg after being struck by a car travelling the wrong way on an Auckland motorway this morning. The 38-year-old suffered serious head and leg injuries and had his leg removed during emergency surgery at Middlemore Hospital, St John Ambulance spokesman Norman Upjohn said. The man was rushed to the hospital after being struck head-on by the car at 1am. A Middlemore Hospital spokeswoman said the man remained in surgery at 9.30am. Police say the driver then fled the scene, between Te Irirangi Drive and Otahuhu, after the crash. Several people had earlier reported the vehicle travelling at speed down the southern lanes on State Highway 1. Police said they were speaking with a man whose car crashed into a tree on the Princess Street southbound on-ramp a short time later. They believed they were talking to the man responsible for the crash. The Harbour Bridge-based serious crash unit is handling the investigation. Meanwhile, a man died in an accident on the northwestern motorway last night. Emergency services were called to the accident, just before the Te Atatu off ramp heading west, around 6pm. Police Inspector Willie Taylor said the male driver may have suffered a medical emergency before the crash.
