CSR 14th July 2012
Going to give it a go this year, a reduction in leave time allowed has ruled out a planned ride to Queensland, the set off date is to be confirmed in the next week, but planning on leaving Wiluna on the 14th July.
Going to head North, the only reason being is that, when I get to Billiluna, depending on time available might head Alice Springs way. I will still have a little over 4 weeks and I have been toying with the idea of doing one of the Simpson crossings, but the CSR is top of the list for me. If at a loose end and this is on your list of things to do, join me, will welcome company, but if you are not keen on sand riding, this might not be for you, thanks to the fellow inmates I PM'd for opinions and advice. This will be a steady but not fast ride, with a couple of half days for a rest and bike checks, will try to arrive at the end of it without too many dramas. Hi Dennis. Sorry to hear Cape York has fallen through. At least you'll get more of your beloved sand on the CSR
Enjoy! |

Watching with interest
Hey good luck with the trip.
I will be interested to see how you go. Been thinking of doing it also, just have not had the self-discipline (nuts?) to have a crack myself... Enjoy.

Ride hard...

Great choice of bike and nice setup. We'll be following your CSR ride.
I've done it a few times if you need any info.

Hi Dennis:
Did you have a build thread for the bike? After my ride last weekend I'm interested in the size of the Pelican cases you use & how they're mounted; why those ones etc... plus the mounting for the cans up front (Wild0 is keen on seeing that one as well) What's your fuel burn like on the highway & in the sand? Will & I seem to be getting figures that are inconsistent with other DRZ's, but similar to each other........ call it a benchmarking exercise. Hope all goes well. Cheers, Mark

Good luck
My advice would be to get fit, reduce as much weight off the bike as you possibly can, & carry a bit more fuel and a bit less water. We carried more than enough water and didn't really need to carry that much. Also took a bit too much food. Took one set of clothes and two paits of socks which was fine I wouldn't even contemplate doing on my own but that's your call. Looking at going back when the northen section isn't as overgrown Rob

The canning will always be overgrown with woody acacia
its what its famous for bikerooter coined the term "slappy sticks" in his 7 deserts RR sorry i aint got the link to it but it was a ripper they are demoralizing, painful and dangerous, as they lean out over the track and whip you silly the track is also demoralizing as it often takes a right angle at the bottom of each dune, washing off all your speed and stability the 2 suzukis are the best bikes for the job i love the 650 but the 400 uses around 3 quarters of the fuel the trade off is, it doesnt hump a load as well at the risk of shameless self promotion, heres a promo for our canning vid id recommend it if your considering this ride it shows the northern section unsupported as a group and the southern section solo

be interested how your hard cases hold up. We all had soft cases and they were all well and truly fukked by the sticks. I clipped a termite mound and totally destroyed my left one. it was held together with zip ties and gaffa tape for two weeks after that
