1984 Honda XR350R, Winter Project

Yep....I just couldn't stand it any longer. I snagged a winter project for Bryce and I to dive in too.....on our time off.

1984 Honda XR350R

Rebuilding this one is going to be a blast!!!!!

This will be the thread for all the rebuild and the pics..... Stay tuned.

We think we got a heck of a deal....... $300

Makes me think of my xr500! This is "olds cool" . I always a pictures of these bikes. Looks at that saweet steel frame, not breaking soon.

Great to see a dad and his boys working together.

I love the 350s for some reason. Sold one last year for 600 and it wasn't in near as good shape as yours is. Looks I mean. I'd say for 300 you got a great deal

Well got the bike home today, and got a table set up with all the tools necesary. The bike is in great condition and i cant believe we got it for only $300. The swing arm looks brand new, and the rims hardly have any rash on them. The engine had its top end completely rebuilt by a shop about 3 years according to the previous owner. the only thing that kind of suprised me was this little electronic devise that i have no clue what it does. The air filter was put in terribly and it looks like a small amount of dust had gotten through but it is a K&N filter so i will see if i can get it all cleaned up or not. And this is the year model that has the dual carb set up which is really awesome. Here is a picture of the electronic thing on the wiring harness if anyone knows what the heck this is it would be awesome to get some info on it...

The kiddo wasted no time. Once the bike was unloaded, it took him about 90 minutes to start the tear-down. We have to get down into the tranny. The bike shifts from 2nd to 4th and we have to figure that out.

But BLbiker is right.....the guy spent $800 on a shop rebuild of the top end, three years ago and we are expecting the bike to be in tip-top shape.....except, needing to spending a few bucks on the tranny.

One thing for sure is new gearing for a real tractor, mountain single-tracker. The stock rear sprocket is a 42T and we will be putting on a 48T (because I have an extra from the XR650R).

That is a nice and complete looking XR350. It even has its factory snorkel in the air box! Reminds me of my 83 and 84 XR5s with the dual carbs and the front disk brake. I do hope you find most parts still usable on it after cleaning things up; and hopefully you discover that the moving parts in the carbs and top end are in good condition.

I do recall the Answer Roost Boost product, but my fuzzy memory seems to remember them for 2 strokes? I'd be very curious to know what it did to the electrical system to improve performance. How is it connected to the system? On the coil is my guess.

I have the bottom end from a parts 85 XL350, mostly blown up. But perhaps there is a tranny part inside that would still be good. I'll follow along with your build here and if you need a tranny part and I have it in the basket case........ then you can come and pick it up.

Exhaust

After taking a better look at the exhaust i found out that the bike came with aftermarket headers and a slip on Super Trap pipe. a great addition to this bike, and it will help the performance a bit once we finish the thing. The pipe is super light and when i compare it to stock Honda pipes it is almost half the weight. and it makes it look great too.

Cool..........just don't get you're hopes up too high. That XL350 bottom end may not have any good parts in it other than the case halves. The side covers were missing along with the top end from this parts bike, and it had been sitting outside. But it is Colorado, and perhaps the inside is just peachy

Took a quick look around the net for info on the Roost Boost to satisfy my curiosity. Best description I found was on this discussion site:

The boost sounds like a simple capacitor added to the AC input of the CDI box. I suppose the phase change to the AC waveform was supposed to allow higher spark voltages somehow. It didn't sound like it was worth the extra weight it adds to the bike. Yours looks like its fried from heat anyway, I'd suggest ditching it.

No worries....and just, half joking with you.

I am just hoping the tranny isn't too much of a financial hit.

We plan to spend a lot of time with the bike over the next 10 days. More updates coming.......

Bryce kept the work up today...... She is now, completely stripped down. We can start the work, on cleaning and sanding down the frame. And we will tear into the tranny........to figure out the 2nd to 4th gear skip.

Thankfully the rear suspension linkage is in great shape, as are the fork seals.....and so many other parts.
