I remembered why I quit doing it.

I went out to dinner with some friends Friday night and had gin and tonic, whiskey, a dry aged filet, baked potato and some creme brle. That was way more fun than riding a fucking bicycle.

Just a quick little 24:39 minute ride and my lungs nearly burst out of my fucking chest. Sucking 36 degree air fucking hurts.

Five little goddamn miles.

Shit.

Still a pretty nice bike.
Except that the seat everyone says is great when it breaks in feels like prison rape until it does.

All of you guys that can crank out mile after mile

Fuck you.

Cold air + exertion = carry an inhaler

Padded seats can chafe on the long haul. Make sure the seat is angled so you're sitting on your cheekbones. IMO, the spring-loaded Brooks saddles absorb shocks better.

You're welcome. Consider swapping out the cassette for one geared lower - makes life a heck of a lot easier.

Brooks Swift is not the seat everyone raves about; that'd be the Brooks B17 and the B68 is even moreso.

Just like anything else, it takes time to build endurance. Legs, lungs, and yer ass.

I can't wait for the first 'how do I shave my legs' post

I love lugged steel road bikes. I got my lugged steel Specialized Sirrus Triple in 1991. I've put tens of thousands of miles on it and have a lot of great memories training for and riding several centuries including my first and last. I'm an avid mountain biker now but will never part with my Sirrus. Back then the Sirrus was on the lower end of Specialized road bike line and now it's a hybrid.

The Raleigh Record Ace is a really nice bike. Good luck with your training & charity ride. But don't stop there. Every serious road rider should experience the biggest & best one day cycling event in the United States - the Hotter 'N Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls, Texas. Held on the last weekend in August, so you have 6 months to get ready! The HHH is not just an event - it's a happening. Lined up with 11,000+ riders at the start my adrenaline never got down to human levels until the 30 mile point. It's almost like getting the first 30 miles free. The organizers, volunteers, & people of Wichita Falls are spectacular.

Regarding the 2 vs 3 chainring debate, my bike came with a triple and I don't remember using it in the HHH but do remember using it in NM in the mountains to actually rest on longer, steeper, climbs. Checkout the video of some tough climbers - not too many triples here. That monster cobblestone is Canton Ave, the steepest public road in the USA. Kicking Canton Ave ass is on my bucket list!

Next someone will show up and tell us all about how they climbed Canton Ave on a fixie. For the rest of us mere mortals, a third ring isn't an option. Even in my best shape on my Trek 1100 I wouldn't have made that climb.

Hello.

Montana Miller, in 2009, finished the race on a fixed-gear.

As a 7 time dirty dozen finisher (eric dobratz, for the stalkers.) The key to canton ave is momentum. A fixie will not afford you this luxury. This whole fixie thing is stupidity to me. It would be like an iron butt ride on a hard tail chopper.

I know for a fact that Montana Miller is doping. Either that or it's that Ohiopyle tap water.

There's a lot to like on that bike. Although, the Surly fork seems like a shotgun marriage to that frame. Not just the color, but the odd curve of the forks... But no matter - how does it ride?
