KTM 9th Annual KTM Adventure Rider Rally

Ok ,It looks like there are four of us leaving for Bend from the Grass Valley,Ca area Wednesday morning. Our routing will be loose and general. Mostly staying between the crest and the desert. East of Lassen and Shasta into Or. Two days to Bend. Going to be FUN.

For those who are traveling to Bend for the KTM Rally, a fire broke out southeast of Sisters in the Pole Creek area (FYI location show on Google maps is inaccurate). It is not any threat to the Rally, but 242 / Mckenzie Highway is closed for the moment. Additionally, the road to Three Creeks Lake is closed, and the Lake area has been evac'd.

Again, no threat to the Rally, not at all. But if you were planning to come over McKenzie Pass, or to camp at Three Creeks Lake, you may need to make other plans.

Here is the information on the meet-ups for some of those that might have made plans and are looking for a last-minute meet-up option.
I would like to be rolling by 8 AM on Thursday.

Some of the other rides/options look really good too and these were not meant to step on any of those, just to provide some more options.

Want to ride into the Rally with a former KTM Dakar rider? We have some options as Paul Krause, Casey McCoy and Jimmy Lewis will be riding in from the south and the north and have invited you to meet up with them for the final leg to Bend, OR.

Here is what you'll need to know. Casey and Paul are coming in from the south as part of a grueling three-day ride and have chosen Cedarville, CA as the meet-up point for the Thursday ride in.

Their plans include stops at Lakeview OR and Silverlake OR. If you know anything about Casey's rides are you will know that those are only gas stops (hopefully there is gas) and not a "lunch stop". He uses a pre-planned track log as a guide which sometimes has to be adjusted on the fly with maps due to changing conditions. If you are interested in meeting up with Casey and Paul and would like to have access to the track log, feel free to contact him at Casey McCoy . These guys ride light and fast and prefer to stay in hotels rather than camp if that gives you some indication of the flavor of the rides. It is adventure on a fast track.



Jimmy Lewis does things a little bit different and will be coming in from the Northwest. He has chosen a campground (where he has never been before) as the meet-up point. It is the Kingfisher, OR campground in the Mt. Hood National Forest. The information is below and as of today there are still plenty of spots available for Wednesday night. On Thursday he will lead a ride on (hopefully) mostly forest dirt roads over to Bend on suggestions from some locals, though he has never ridden them before either! This is adventure exploring without much of a plan, other than to have a fun and safe ride to Bend in time for a beer. From Estacada, travel east on Highway 224 for 26 miles, then turn right on Road 46 and continue for 5 miles. Turn onto Road 63 and continue for 4 miles. Turn onto Road 70 and continue about 2 miles to the campground.

The entire zone from the Old Mackenzie Highway to Forest Road 4601 has been closed.

I'm working on an alternative loop for the rally that avoids this area. Lots of great riding areas where we can avoid the smoke and closures.

McKenzie is back open but it is a moving target....moving west, according to a friend at the DNF, growing.

There was a pretty hard frost last night in Bend. Weather is forecast to be in the 70's to low 80's during the day the next few days. It's going to be below freezing tonight and maybe tomorrow night and then in the low 40s at night after that. Because of the fire danger there are no fires allowed outside of developed campgrounds and they may have even shut those down. It's a huge fine if you get caught with a campfire during fire closures and there will be planes in the air looking for spot fires from the Pole Creek forest fire. Better bring an extra layer or two if you're camping.
