Julio,

Enjoy Your Christmas holiday in Guatemala with your sons. It is unfortunate your daughter cannot join you, but I recall you were able to spend time with her in Oregon.

I will be spending my first Christmas ever away from home. My girls and I will be in Malpais on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.

If you are headed for Oaxaca for a week, consider checking out the Bahias de Huatulco. It's a beautiful area.

I hope it can happen next time.

You & Luisa ride safe.

Yes , unfortunately work comes in the way so many times in our life...but like you say there will always be a next time . Considering that we all live all over the world being able to get together with 3 ou of 4 is not so bad after all
Hope everything is going strong at your end !!

Thanks for your wishes , and yes yes I will enjoy it . The short time I spent with my daughter riding in Oregon was incredible !! And yes, we will go down to the beach before heading back to Guatemala
Enjoy Costa Rica , it's a nice place to be . Or as they say down there : PURA VIDA !!!!

So does that mean you aren't coming to visit?
No worries, we'll settle your bet with Officer Shawn next time you're around. No cipro or pepto involved!
Have fun and that's good you can save some QuetzalPesos on the clutch.

We may have to settle that bet with all of us together! Our wives can be witnesses that the debt was settled!
I'm Not sure when that will happen but it would be a great time

Julio enjoy Oaxaca!! Its just one more place that you have put on my bucket list! But I was able to cross off Copper Canyon with you so I guess there is room for more

Thanksgiving in Morelia

I was enjoying Thanksgiving in Casona Rosa in Morelia with Rose and some other friends and sadly without Julio, who was sick with salmonela.

Our beautiful host cooking

The beautifully set table

Moncho, ready to slice the turkey

Thank you friends for a beautifull Thanksgiving

On the road from Puebla to Oaxaca when I saw the signs for Perote I was actually pretty tempted to detour , I just like that ugly town . But then I remebered that they might make me their alcalde if I go there one more time... and I changed my mind and I kept on going to Oaxaca.

Hola Julio,

I have been following your travels and enjoying your delightful pictures as you travel south. I am a bit further south and have just crossed over into the Peten this morning into bonita Guatemala. It's good to be back!

I am heading to Carmelita and hiking to El Mirador in the coming days and notice you will be heading there in the coming weeks. Was wondering if you have any ideas on who to contact regarding hiking guides.

Was riding with MikeMike last month and he had nothing but good things to say about his time with you and Luisa.

Kindest regards,
John Downs

Hi John,
good to have you along ! I have been following and enjoying your journey as well .
Mike is a great guy, too bad he always lets work getting in his way

I will do the hike to the Mirador with a guide from the local community in Carmelita
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui...line&safe=1&zw

There you will find all the info, prices etc.
I was also told that there might be a cheaper way to do it, if you go with a private guy , not with an official guide from the community

Looking forward to your pics and hike report!

Julio

Muchas gracias,

Enjoy your stay in Estado de Oaxaca.

Remembering Rta. 175 to Puerto Angel still brings a smile.

I will report back what I find in the Peten. The rainy season is winding down in Northern Guatemala, but I think I will be posting pictures of an old gringo covered in mud sometime next week. Should be fun!

Safe travels.

Saludos,
John Downs

Morelia-Valle de Bravo

The day we left Morelia , we left new friends behind...

But we also knew we would see a good old friend in Valle again ; we took the ruta de las Mil Cumbres to get there...scenic and impressive route would be a understatement

We left Michoacan, one of my favorite states in Mexico, to enter the state of Mexico

And then we got to Valle de Bravo, lots of good memories about this place

We stopped at our favorite restaurant

And waited for our friend Carlos (who we met on one of our rides in Chiapas , several years ago) to show up. As soon as he did , we had our first MicheLobo...a michelada with oysters and shrimps in it

Hi Cal ! Your Spanish is so good!!!
Yes I like it too!!! Rose, the owner of the place, has a great taste.
And you are right, it is a wonderful place to stay.
We stayed there almost 2 weeks!!!
And in our way up to the north I think 4 days.
Good to hear about you.
Cuídate mucho!!!

Monarch Butterflies

On our second day in Valle de Bravo, our friend Carlos took us to one of the sanctuaries of the mariposa Monarca ; these butterflies are one of so many miracles of nature . They migrate from Canada and the northern US all the way down to Michoacan and Mexico ; it takes 5 generation to complete the journey.

Most of the people go up to the sanctuary on horseback , we hiked . Carlos was not to happy about that

The butterflies hang on the trees, there are so many of them that the branches are completely bended downwards . When it is cold, they are all closed up and the dark side of their wings are visible . As soon as it warms up, they open the wings and the orange color of their wings shows; if the sun heats the air up a bit more , then they start flying around . Unfortunately the day we went there , it was not warm enough for them to fly around.
