california Legal handgun

I'm thinking of buying a low priced handgun just to have and to shoot at the range off and on. I've owned handguns before that were pricey and never really shot them that much. It's been years so I'm not up to date on the market. I have smaller hands. I'm open to anything and have owned both revolvers and semi automatic pistols.. Help!
thanks much

Well, Ruger and S&W have been pulled from the approved list. A lot of guns have fallen off the approved list. I'd probably get a Glock (or maybe a 1911). Nothing fancy but built like a brick outhouse and fairly inexpensive. 9 mm would be the cheapest and easiest to get ammo for. 45 acp would come in second. Unfortunately with Ruger and S&W off-list, that means most of the quality revolvers are now harder to get. If they are in the state they are legal to purchase but the new ones are getting harder to find. Not that most places carry a lot of new guns to begin with.

As of this posting, both S&W and Ruger have handguns listed as approved on the California DOJ website.

My bad, I should have elaborated, S&W and Ruger have removed just about all of their Semi-auto's except for a few. (The M&P9 Shield was grandfathered in, IIRC. but it's the only M&P.) Ruger said they will be letting all of their semi-auto's fall off the list. Though they only have three semi-auto's on the list, all of them being the P95 on the list, IIRC. A lot of revolvers fell off the list as well though. You can only PPT those guns.

Here's a list of what's been removed; http://oag.ca.gov/sites/oag.ca.gov/f...ms/removed.pdf

You should just get your hands on lots of different guns and try them. Go rent guns and shoot your friends' guns. You will start to figure out real fast what you like and don't like.

We're screwed here in CA. To get a sample of what is out there go to Buds Guns

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/i...rnia+Compliant

Its a list of all hand guns THEY have for sale that meet CA requirements. Less and less every day...

Less then 200 pistols with most variants of teh same model. One of the many problems with the CA Approved list is that they make distinctions between variants. If the gun has a different item number then it's a different gun. So if you have two guns that are the same model but one had different grips, sights, etc, it's considered a different gun and need it's own Approval. Typically the one you want is the variant that's not Approved.

We ARE screwed! I wanted to buy a Ruger Mk 3 .22 and found they are no longer CA approved. The Gun manufactures aren't playing the "pay to get my gun on the roster" game. So as guns expire from the list they aren't being replaced. There is a law suit about it, but don't hold your breath.

Find a dealer who will do a SSE before that ends Jan. 1 2015 if you really want something new and off roster and are in California.
