Hi Harry, I couldn't see anyone answers your question. Guess you sorted it out so far, however for the protocol. I had a flickering red light and it went out after 1500rpm. It was the waterpump issue - there was not enough oil pressure in the engine, caused by failing paper oil filter. However after 2000rpm there was enough pressure. Still - you should fix the waterpump in such situations and not really continue riding like this.

Cheers,
Nik.

Slidewayes, just finished with reading your post on the new thread I opened in OC, and I agree. Gonna contact my KTM dealer for a look see and fix. Thanks again to you and the others for your input on this.

I've been living in a cave the last few years and just discovered this list last month! Anyway I'm hoping when I get back stateside by the beginning of next year to pick up a good used R1150GS or (what I seem to be leaning more towards) a 990 Adventure for a few more bucks.

The 990 appears to be a better deal from my perspective. What if any year(s) are more desirable? If you have links to threads that would be great too!

This thread has really been a force in me considering the KTM. Thanks guys!

Thanks! I've been working my way through the HOW, didn't get to that part yet.

Anything else, let me know. Much appreciated.

I bought my '10 990 about a year ago. After doing some research I decided that I'd only get a '09 or up due to FI improvements that started in that year. I loaded the '11 "R" FI map into it and have not looked back

I'm thinking that next year we will see the 1190 introduced if you want the newest/greatest

I'd love to buy new, but rarely do. For some reason I have this mental block that if for example I go out and hammer and beat on a used $8000.00 bike it's better than hammering and beating on a brand new $15,000.00 one. Then there's the teething problems of the new gear. But the new 1190 would be nice no doubt, maybe...

Glancing at one place, a bunch of 2007s are up for sale, there's even one under $7000.00 with a bit of milage on it that one could really enjoy for a few seasons and not get to hosed on the initial outlay. Heck I've even considered buying two used ones of the same model years for at or a bit more than it would cost for a new one.

There's a 2008 that I wouldn't mind snatching right now, but well see what's available when I get back - maybe 5 - 6 months from now, we shall see. In the meantime I've got plenty of time to research this out and work myself up!

Air filter

Check it.

Mine after 6000 miles and last week's KTM Rally

Finally rode the bike this morning after this air filter change and wow what a difference in throttle response. What was becoming a very jerky throttle anything under 4k revs is now back to pretty smooth and very ridable.

ACC 2 - Where is it?

I have a new 2012 990R and damm if I can find the ACC 2 on this bike. My past two 990's I was able to find it easily behind the headlight. I can't seem to find it there. Am I just blind? I'm trying to install my heated grips.

Engine VIN and Emissions Cert

As a note if you're looking to match the frame numbers to the engine numbers, the sidestand relocation bracket will hide the engine VIN (at least on my '10 ADV). This becomes important if you are trying to prove to the DMV that it aint stolen when trying to register an out of state bike. Note that removing the relocator involves removing the sidestand and the centerstand. I personnally had my katoom leaning against a tree with the skid plate, center stand and sidestand off showing the ever enthusiastic DMV lifer mu numbers. Easiest thing to do would be to remove the relocator at home and put the stand back to stock before the excursion to the DMV. One more note (again, experience limited to my '10), especially for those in CA, the 50 state emissions cert is under the right (starboard) fuel tank lobe.

Austrians are sadistic.

Not really a problem reading the VIN with standart sidestand. If you can't read it with the relocation, then it's more probably that the producer did not think about that ;-) You should point this out to him/her.

Cheers,
Nik.

Hey Nik,

There's no getting around it, really. That relocator is non-optional because of the case vulnerability, and that's just where the backing plate needs to go. The main thing is to know that it's there; because knowing is half the battle.
