6spd is not necessary for our riding. with 5 it will do 80! And gearing will be better for single track.

I would never buy a new bike, all they do is look worse and worse... Its depressing.

Doing 80 and cruising comfortably are two different things. When I gear my 300 for 5MOH in Utah, it's only comfortable crusing at 45mph on the dirt road sections.

Thanks. I've heard the cartridge models are superior.. and likely believe it, but I've been very happy with the WP setup + Slaven's spec'd springs on my '06 so I'm sure I can get this dialed in. As you said, I'll use the 5 spd as it comes for a while and convert only if needed. This bike should spend most it's time in 1st - 3rd terrain.

Yep.. If I go used on the 300 then I'm keeping the 450. It's spend the last 2 months getting an end-to-end rebuilt, engine, forks, new wiring, new plastics & graphics, etc.. I don't think I could part with it now.

Extra wheels = yes. Prolly upgrade tanks on both bikes too. Going to use some $ on new boots and an Arai as well. Not going to waste money on more gps. I've been hauling around my HCx all summer and you've refused to admit navigational defeat and actually pull it out of my pack for me even once.

PS - funny hearing about lights from you.. I've been okay with my X2 setup, but it doesn't really matter how great my lighting is when it gets dark and you're sporting that f-ing number plate.

Current owner says with trail gearing it'll pull a sustained 60-65 comfortably. Evidentially the '09 have 4th & 5th spaced a little further than previous years (downside being it can feel a little "gappy" above 3rd).

Nice thing about your 450 is you can switch wheels between both bikes. I used to do it all the time when I owned
my 530. That is one thing I miss. I would like to get an extra set of wheels.

That is if your 450 is a KTM.

yup. 06 450exc.. hoping it's all compatible.

One thing to watch for is bent or misaligned rims. I took mine over to woodies and found both rims and rotor were bent. I had
few hours on the bike and felt like it had not been abused.

They will work just fine. Had a 50 tooth on the 300 rear wheel, and a 48 on the 530.
Worked out nicely. Only the 530 required a longer chain to run the 50 tooth. One other mod that
I need to do on the 300 is get a steering stabilizer, and a set of flexx bars. Torn rotator cuff on
the right shoulder is telling me to get a stabilizer. I have never considered selling my 300.
It has seen many bikes come and go in the garage.

That's some funny stuff there! I'm always helping my number plated friends out.....wait a minute, I have a headlight that I've never mounted and a number plate on my bike!

I wouldn't get that used 3 hundo it's all used and abused, and a '09 with pro set up suspension just isn't enough bike, I know that it would constantly be holding me back at my skill level. What's the owners phone number I'll let him know you don't want it.

FWIW, I just had an '11 6spd XC tranny put in my 09 300XCW

Really improves the gaps of the XCW and gives me better cruising speed

I figure the new bikes aren't that much improved over my 09, so why spend the $$

Got 140hrs on mine and it's as strong as it ever was - guys are getting upwards of 200hrs on this motor before needing a top end, since it makes so much power down low you really don't have to wring it out

That's the part that I like. When I had it up for sale last summer, a guy told me the top end needed to be done because it had 50 hours on it.


I told him this wasn't a 1989 YZ250.
