Upside down, like maybe off the sweet kicker (840) for busting a Knack-Knack superman backflip.

That sounds like linkage, it should shift up and down pretty easily riding it, like you said, no clutch on normal easy downshifts. you mentioned it starting off normally using the clutch which sounds like that is working ok. Haven't had the 300 apart but inkage is usally under the basket accessable from the RH cover (big one). Usally the only thing that happens inside the center cases is bent shift fork which typically causes a problem with one (or two) gears, not all of them. Time to pull the cover

I did something similar a few weeks go, I was cresting a 5' table top ledge and was a gear high, went to downshift just as the momentum went away and caught neutral instead. I tried to ride it out going backwards but of course but it promptly dumped me at the bottom, it was pretty funny.

Here's a pretty cool vid, makes me glad I got the 300, wish I could ride this good though.

My comments:

Jeez, I sure look good in my new Shift outfit!

My favorite scene is where the four stroker follows the two stroker through the trees but goes right of the line around one tree. A real whoah moment!

Second guy going up the cliff sure has confidence in the first guy making it.

I'm guessing this is Oz? B/c of the opener's accent, the vegetation and the ocean scenes?

Typically I can easily up/downshift just by letting off the throttle for a second without even touching the clutch (actually that's what I normally do), but it's not working very well now. When I have it in first, I can still slip and feather the clutch fine and it feels smooth.

When I hand shift the lever while on the stand it's definitely a bit sticky.. it doesn't just click and spring back to center. It'll catch in the up or down position sometimes.

I started up a thread on KTM talk and they're getting my hopes up that it's likely in the shift linkage under the clutch basket. Really hoping they're right and I can avoid pulling it out and splitting cases.
The first thing I would check is the weld on the shift shaft. Tom's 300 broke @ the weld last year. It was a very quick and easy repair as the shaft is removed out the right side of the engine underneath the intermediate cover.

Cool.. hoping to have a chance to pull it apart tonight.

House construction is painful.

Finally get 'er apart today.. Fortunately it's the linkage. The little allen head bolt holding on the shift selector barrel had backed out so the slot on barrel's backside was no longer catching consistently.

Glad you caught it now before it backed out far enough to damage the cases or get sent into the primary drive/clutch basket.
