Yes, Reg has been around since JC played halfback for Jerusalem All Saints College way back when...

At a guess I'd say he has done more than half the Safari's ever run... going way back to the 80's... and most of them with co-driver/mechanic, maestro of the understatement and car builder extraordinaire Russel Cairns beside him!

Reg won the event in 1992 partnered with Andy Brown in the all conquering (that year) AAMI LWB Nissan Patrol team. He has run in everything from the most potent of "brute V8 utes" to relatively showroom production standard diesel 4x4's... but always Nissan patrols of some shape or form.

One year Reg and Russ punted their old Donovan engined V8 Nissan pick-up ute into a yellow box gum tree that was about 10 feet across at the base - out near Condobolin. The impact pushed the entire front of the car back about 12 inches...

When they came into the bivouac that afternoon (on a tow strap), one of the controllies asked; "What happened...?!"

Russel (handling the paperwork from the navigator seat), replied rather matter of factly through the small perspex opening in the nav door window... "Ummmm... We put a stick through the radiator..."

Herridges Subaru Forrester is really doing well (he is driving clean and fast)... surprising that a (relatively) standard configuration vehicle is taking the abuse, that has seen other (purpose built off road machines) fail in the tough terrain and conditions.

I would love to see "Wildman" Ivan make the podium... that alone would make flying to Geralton (from Europe) worthwhile... just to be at the presentation...!!! Talk about what an "off the hook" do that would end up being...!!!???
