Mile Marker 136--FOROPWC New Member Recruit Day

Well, we took MotoCox up on his free trail rider day. Boy, did the day start out rough. I tried to get as much intel before the ride on the terrain, but alas most folks "had only rode here in a race". That should have been my big red flag that things were going to be tough! Race=fast which is something Team Turtle abhors!

However, we do find out the loop is berely in the woods which follows the field. So, if the going gets too rough look for open space and your find base camp.

We set out on the "true" start of the trail. It's well marked, but the trail is covered in deep leaf matting. I wouldn't call the traction great, but was acceptable. I should have paid more attention as we started the trail, becuase it was hugging this ravine...

Sure enough, the trail drops down into the ravine. The only "nice" thing I can say about the ravine is where we cross it is quite flat on the bottom. However, it very steep on the out. Looking down stream and up, there was no way out but the incredibly steep out.

I wished that the TTR was the steed for the day, but alas, I would have to have the DR200 give it a go. Takes me two attempts, and then 3 men pushing it up. EOD3MC needed 1 attempt, a tree, and 4 men to push the KLR:

We followed the main trail for another 1/4 mile, and stopped gazing into the field of "freedom". A few folks stopped to talk and said the "first mile" is quite hairy and only gets worse. So, with that I plot my escape back to the truck. Forlorn that the trail had conquered me today, but happy to have escaped unharmed. Live to fight another day.

As luck would have it, MotoCox had finished two other sections of trail from base camp. One section he said was very rideable. So off we trotted to redeem ourselves. It was a lovely trail 2 mile-ish trail with two steep descents. Not very ruttted/whooped out. So, did that 4-5 more times before calling it a day.

Blaster was a real sport and guarded base camp for us all day..

Dave, since you expressed an interest in going.....a little lite reading. Oh and you will definitely need to work the fuel thing out, like maybe the extra tank plus your Rotopax. Maybe just borrow Matt's for the trip.

a few more pictures from today's outing....

First a very rare sight.....1st time it's ever been trucked somewhere

The before picture..."before" we headed out on the trail with the hill from hell...
It was a bike bike trail day

Looking up the hill...main path up the center was rutted with roots, left side was smoother but soft, right side was shorter but steeper...decisions....decisions...

Apparently, we weren't the only ones flustered a bit. Most of the riders who approached it stopped and plotted before attempting...

From the top looking down you get a better idea of the height and steepness..

After escaping from that part of the loop, the two mile section we found was much more our style..still technical and tight, but less vertical.

Thanks again to Eban for letting us know about the ride....nice to see the family riding

Tracks must have been mislabled. titled multiple versions of "Bull Run". No Middleburg! no biggie though I should have loaded them earlier. Still had a good ride . Went over through Fredericksburg and came back over Whites Ferry. Did some gravel roads and a few puddles. No water crossings. 260 miles. Maybe next time. Thanks for sending me the files anyway. Maybe we can all plan a ride out there.

So, how about 1 Dec around 1800? As melting pot tends to be bit spendy, I figure we can use this to close out CY2012 and welcome in a new prosperous year!

That is really strange. I just double checked the files and don't see anything named "bull run". Which GPS are you running? Also, once the track is on the SD card you need to import them to Zumo as a "track" not a "route". But I am sure well be out there soon enough:)
