Is there something I'm misunderstanding here, or something lost in translation, or does all of Lima have a fraction of the rooms of one Vegas hotel?

Bluebull, you might have some people that need to stay at your place.
be sure to book early to avoid disappointment.

Typical of local government spokespersons - They're prone to having brain explosions.

Lima is city of 11 million people. Need I say more?

Apart from the Mariott, Westin, Lima Country Club, Andina, Doubletree, Swisshotel (among others) which together must have over 3,000 luxury rooms, there must be close to 1,000 hotels and hostels in this city.

HogWild- Have you got any plans to enter a multi-day stage rally again?
I'm sure your Harley needs a good blast, and we need another fantastic story!

Good luck with whatever you are doing at the moment.

Cheers!

Great to hear you're entering, Neil!

With the new start date, I guess I'll officially have to take a few days of vacation for next year's coverage. Until now I made it with a couple of days of Xmas vacation and then an eye for the race and an eye for work for the second week.

I'd race Dakar again if I could afford it. It probably won't happen, but I'm always open to a new opportunity! The last race I did was the 2010 NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally (photo). I keep my eyes open for other interesting events, but it takes something out of the ordinary to get me to race.

These days my moto priority is my Grand Rally project. I'm also taking a major roll in preparing the roadbooks for the Mexican 1000 Rally. And I will be supplying roadbooks for the Jimmy Lewis rally training, and continue to supply roadbooks for other private rally navigation practice outings (i.e. Cody, Campbell, McMillin, Neduro, BC, ...).

The latest, and possibly most exciting development is that I just began work on creating an all new motos only multi-day stage rally RACE which will focus on extremely challenging roadbook navigation and challenging desert terrain.

Unfortunately none of these activities currently involve the hog. But they all involve helping prepare others for Dakar and other big rallies!

Well I think I said it in the Bivouac - I was not able to get things together for me to enter Dakar 2013. Reading this thread was kinda depressing.

I have my sights on 2014 now, but this year the plan is to chase the Dakar on my 800 for 6 days or so with a couple of mates. So you will get not much competition from me in the F5 thread, but one more source of on-the-ground info and photos.

Looking forward to the reporting, and the 2014 campaign prep Neil

Awesome!

Quinn is my dark horse for stage wins... and what a style on the bike! Never get tired of watching him hang it all out on that segment before the huge ass-over-end crash last year ... he's the closest you can get to a Robby Gordon of the bikers

Not to clutter up the HRC-files thread with historical non-related (to Honda) dakar-ista like waffle...

The QC post (about his reported Husky/Speedbrain ride for january) and Brodo's reference to his (almost) "take no prisoners" riding style,
reminded me of a conversation I had only a few weeks back with a Finnish friend, about past Dakar riders who "pushed the envelope" pace wise.

The subject of our conversation was of course, the Finnish 7 times Enduro world champion and multiple ISDE gold medalist - Kari Tiainen; who rode the Dakar with KTM a number of times (1999 to 2002?), and while he was from the outset, always very quick and able to run at a pace up with (or ahead of) the leaders... he frequently "binned it" with his aggressive style and approach to the longer desert stages... attacking them like it was a WEC special test. As a result... i'm not sure if he ever finished a Dakar?

Probably the all time record holder in the "balls to the wall" dakar attack stakes, is KTM's own Heinz Kinigadner... His list of rallye crashes (and near misses) and legacy as the "the fastest rider never to win a dakar" is legendary, and stems back to the very fist INCAS Rallye in Peru 1988; where he launched his KTM 350 Incas rally bike of the side of a mountain pass during one stage... and earned the nickname "el condor" for a while.

Some of the aerial footage of him attacking the Peterhansel/Yamaha Sonauto armada - running solo up out at the front of the field - on the early versions of the 620/640cc LC4 Rallyes/Adventure; during the 1995/1996 Dakar's was breathtaking.

So who is your favourite "win it... or bust trying" DAKAR legend...?
