Two Bills introducing Lane Splitting to Texas
State Rep. Sergio Munoz (D-Mission) and state Sen. Kirk Watson (D-Bastrop) have introduced bills supported by Texas motorcyclists that would legalize responsible lane splitting practices in the state. Munoz’ H.B. 813 would allow riders to split lanes at a speed no more than 5 mph faster than other vehicles if traffic is moving slower than 20 mph. This bill also requires riders who split lanes to wear a helmet. The second bill, Watson’s S.B. 442, would allow riders to split lanes at a speed no more than 5 mph faster than other vehicles if traffic is moving slower than 20 mph. However, S.B. 442 would limit lane splitting to limited-access or controlled-access highways. If you want lane splitting it's time to contact your representatives & ask them to support these bills.
Below is a handy web application from the AMA. Just input your info and they will send emails to YOUR representatives on your behalf.
Can't be bothered to click a link and spend 2 minutes typing? Don't whine! Ask your friends to help, too.
Even better? *call* your senator & rep's offices in Austin, say the same thing. It has more impact when you bother to pick up the phone & talk to a human. Please use http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/ to enter your home address, find out who your *state* (not federal) representative & senator are
This is how such a call usually plays out:
Hello, Senator Whitmire's office
Hi, who can I speak to about SB442? It's a transportation bill
Oh, that'd be Betty Boop - hold please
Hi, this is Betty
Hi Betty, I'm calling to express support for SB442
Okay, are you in Senator Whitmire's district? (ie, should we give a flip about your opinion?)
Why, yes, I am!
Okay - do you mind giving us your contact info?
Not at all [cough up name/address/phone]
Okay, we'll make a note of your call, thank you
