Nordkapp Travel Report

We just started to get prepared when the dream to reach to Nordkapp, which in fact accompanies every cyclist came to our mind. This trip which we had already planned for July 2009, just following the Morocco trip on 2008, came to foreground at the end of our travel to Alps and Dalmatian coast we did on 2009, together with our spouses.
Our travel started on 12 June, with our planning to be at Nordkapp on 30 June, with the best and mild climatic conditions, and ended on 18 July.

1st day

We took the fast ferry from Mudanya on the evening of 11 June, to get our motorcycles we had already expedited to Trieste from Pendik with Unroro Lines, we spent the nigh at Istanbul and flew to Venice next morning. We had in mind to arrive to Italy one day before and visit Venice before taking over our motorcycles.
Our plane landed to Marco Polo Airport around noon. We immediately hired one of sea-taxis just next to the airport, and

passing through those who were enjoying a lovely and sunny day, and

by-passing first Murano Island, renowned for its glass craftsmanmanship,

We reached to San Marco Square.

We could just take this shot, for the Bridge of Sighs was under alteration.

We climbed to the tower in the Square and threw a birds-eye view glance to the town.

We took some photos of streets from the Square, and

We reached to Famous Rialto Bridge on “Canal Grande”.

While Mr. Hasan was shopping,

we examined mask worn by Venetians during their festival.

We were due to reach to Trieste from Mestre by the night train, so we delayed a little bit the lunch and united it with dinner, roamed around the streets, and

We had our dinner in a little and lovely restaurant just at the back of San Marco Square.
Menu: Pizza, Veal Carpaccio, and

Risotto con Frutta di Mare/Rice with Sea Fruits

Finally, we savored our “Tremisou” in San marco Square, together with music.

Meanwhile, we met a bride like we did during Syria travel, but we were not very close with her as the one at Ksara, Lebanon

While we were slowly leaving Venice with Trieste train,

Gondolas were still sailing on Canal Grande together with serenades.

We reached to Mestre rail station after a short journey from the island. Trieste train departed with 30 minutes delay and took us to Trieste in one hour and a half. We walked a little bit and found our hotel.

2nd Day Trieste İnnsbruck

We woke up in the morning having had a good rest at night, and had our breakfast at the hotel. We were quite excited, for we were planning to take over our motorcycles today at the port and start our journey.

We started to plan the travel on September 2009, and first of all we did a reservation at Rica Hotel in Honningvag, a small town 30 km far from Nordkapp, for the night of 30 June.
Route studies, accommodation places and hotel reservations and listing of places worth to visit took almost 4 months.

Finally, everything was clear and all details were set up at the end of April, concerning a travel including 12 countries and a lot of towns and small settlements. Hotel reservation at Trieste, motorcycle transport by rail Munich-Hamburg, Stockholm-Riga and Helsinki-Stockholm ship reservations, and entire hotel reservations except in Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein were completed.
We were planning to reach to Kiel from Oslo by “Color Line” on our way home, but we did not reserve this journey and motorcycle transport by train Hamburg-Munich, taking eventual deviations into account towards the end of travel.

We left our hotel and started to walk to the quay the ro-ro ship was planned to berth, and looked around for we had enough time.
There was a sportive event at the square before us. Stands about horses, horse carriages, bicycles and surf sports were erected.

Main entrance to the port was closed due week-end, so we took the short-cut used by trailer-truck drivers.

Ro-ro ship arrived in time; we took over our motorcycles and left Trieste around 13:00 hours (1:00 PM)

The great odyssey we were imagining for such a long time starts....

The route we used to introduce “Rakı” to Nordkapp, (a liitle big long, but it was worth of)

European part

Baltic part

This is our today’s route,and

our trace record

We took the expressway from Trieste and reached Tolmezzo over Udie. Then, we travelled on mountain roads end entered to Austria through Plocken Pass.

We stopped off near Vinklern for the first time.

And afterwards Heiligenblut

and Hohe Tauern National Park

Locals and symbols of the national park

Glacier within the territory of National Park

After the national park, we stopped over Edelweisspitze, by passing through Grossglockner pass. Weather was better than the last time. We had used the same route during our travel with Lutfu; together with our spouses. It was snowing then, but it is raining today. Next time, I hope to pass through in a sunny day.

After climbing down from Grossglokner, we continued over Mittersill, Gerloss Pass and Fügen and reached to Inssbruck.
We could not take photos due rainy weather and the day getting dark.

3rd Day Innsbruck, Garmish, Chur

Our trace record

Our route

We left our hotel at Innsbruck in the morning after a good rest

We planned to go to Garmish and to climb to Zug Spitze, but decided, once we arrived to Eibsee to take the cableway, that it was nonsense to climb, for the weather was not clear at all.

Though we could not climb to Zug Spitze, we can use some photos from the archive, shot in a sunnier day.
Zug Spitze, the highest mountain of Germant and located on the border with Austria, and the ski zone can be reached by train departing from Garmish. You can climb then by cableway to the summit and then climb down and return by train. You can find on the following website detailed information about Zug Spitze, which became more interesting with panorama terrace inaugurated at the end of June 2010.

To the summit from Eibsee

We spent a little time around, did shopping in a motorcycle shop and started out.
Our route is Chur over Garmish, Lech and Vaduz. 4 countries in the same day: Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

Vaduz

and Chur, where we decided to spend the night

4th Day Chur Andermatt Garmish

Our route

Our trace record

We started from Chur in the morning and arrived to Andermatt through Oberalp Pass

We could not take much photos today too, for the nice weather of Alps did not left us. Images of helmet camera are not too good due rain drops and vapor accumulated on the lens. We’ll see if we’d able to add good shots in a more available time, by selecting among nice photos.

We continued from Andermatt and reached to Airola through St. Gottardo tunnel (nearly 17 km).

We followed up the road leading to St. Gottardo Pass from Airola, and first reached to Tremola, and then to the proximity of Andermatt where we entered to the tunnel, by passing through St. Gottardo Pass and following mountain roads, and steered for Furka Pass.

Grimsel Pass after Furka Pass

We stopped over at Grimsell Pas for lunch and stocked a little energy.

Still frozen lake in front of the place where we dined

and after, Susten Pass

We visited Susten Pass, and entered again to Austria from Switzerland over Liechtenstein, followed St Anton-Imst course and reached through FernPass to Garmish whwre we’ll spend the night. It rained on the way again after Imst. We didn’t take any photos, for we passed FernPass in the dark.

5th Day Garmish Munich

We gave up once again the idea to climb to Zug Spitze when we saw the cloudy and dark weather while we had our breakfast in our hotel at Garmish. We decided to go first to Linderdorf over Ettal and visit the summer palace of King Ludwig, and continue over Am Plansee to King Ludwig’s castle at Neuschwanstein, near Fussen.

After our visit of the castle, we started for Munich to catch the night train for Hamburg. We did some shopping from the nearby market for dinner. We loaded first our motorcycles at the train station,

we got in the cabin where we’ll spend the night ant set the table

6th Day Hamburg Copenhagen

Our route

Our trace record

This was a kind of different day, for we would be starting for the real objective of the travel, Nordkapp.

Our train entered to the station around 08:15 in the morning. We took over our motorcycles and we started near 09:00.

Waiting for the unloading of our motorcycles in Hamburg

We headed to north nearly 200 km from Hamburg and took the ferry from Fynshavn to Bojden

Following our route, and over Nyborg and through Golden Belt,

We arrived to copanhagen, checked in the hotel and started to stroll around the town

We reached to Copenhagen and checked in our hotel. Then, we started to roam around the town.

We visited first the famous “mermaid” statue, but to our great surprise, we met with a TV broadcast. The statue was removed to a fair ground and only the image was broadcast.

I may say that it was not a great pity, for I had seen it before

Then we went first to Kastelet,

and visited Amelienborg Square

We did not left our motorcycles even at the bar

7th Day Copenhagen Helsingborg Goteborg Jönkoping

Our route

Our trace record

We left Copenhagen early in the morning. We had planned to have our breakfast at Helsingor, where we’d take the ferry for Helsingborg. We visited Helsingor castle after the breakfast, took the ferry and crossed to Sweden.

We had our breakfast in a square at Helsingor

Meanwhile, Lutfu repeated his traditional camera-breaking event here too, just the replica of Dubrovnik during the Adriatic travel. He tried here to take the camera which hangers were put around the backrest of the bank, and Nikon 200 hit the ground and the lens perfectly crashed, leaving just the body to Lutfu.

Helsingor Castle

We took the ferry for Helsingbor after having finished the castle visit and reached to Göteborg over Halmstad and Varberg, by following the coastline.

First, the city center, Götaplatsen

and then,the wheel of Göteborg

Norra Hamngatan

We had our lunch at Kyrkogatan

We went to Basargatan after the lunch; to take a channel tour by boats called “Paddan” and passed under nearly 20 bridges.

Our guide

Göteburg from the channel

We helped a Swedish lady to start her engine and had some problem due battery defect, when we went to take our motorcycles to continue our journey. We started her engine by connection cable from Lutfu’s motorcycle. The lady was so pleased from this service that she first tried to give us meal coupons. We kindly refused. Then she offered us some money, and we kindly refused too. She was so happy that she left by thanking us a lot. Then we started towards Jönköping where we’d spend the night.

Views from the route

The hotel’s restaurant was closed when we arrived to Jönköping very late in the night. We had our dinner in a nearyby burger house, spent a little time at the hotel’s bar and went to our bedrooms.

8th Day Jönköping Stockholm

Our route

Our trace record

We got prepared to start after the breakfast in the morning.
Front of the hotel where we stayed.

After having left Jönköping,

we stopped over at Nyköping,and

we arrived to Stockholm around noon, as we had already planned.

However, and what was not foreseen at all, Princess Victoria’s wedding changed our program a lot. The hostel where we’d planned to stay was around 250 m far from the Royal Place and all roads in this zone were closed to circulation. We were planning to check in the hostel as soon as possible, change to our comfortable suits and start to explore the town, but we found ourselves right in the middle of wedding ceremony.

The avenue closed to circulation, and which we should use to reach to our hostel

We parked our motorcycles in a convenient place when we could find no solution, and started to wait for.

And then, we left our motorcycles where we’d parked them and drove into the crowd.

Views from the ceremony place

While wedding ceremony was broadcasted on giant screens,

people had already gathered around the Royal Palace where the bride and groom should arrive by the sea

Air force planes were flying over while the navy was saluting by gunfire

The “royal barge” is approaching to the Royal Palace, together with the bride and groom,

the front of the Royal Palace got much activated. Everybody had climbed over something to see a bit, a plenty of people were at windows of our hostel and nearby buildings.

We just found an opportunity and shot the “royal barge” approaching by

And we returned to the place where we’d laft our motorcycles and waited for the re-opening of vehicle traffic at the bar of a nearby hotel

It was nearly 18:00 hours (8:00PM) when the vehicle traffic turned out to normal and we could at last check in the hosyel. We left our motorcycle suits, wore our daily suits and returned to streets.

We slowly started to head back to our hotel while it was getting late

We stopped a little and enjoyed in front of the hotel and got to our room to rest

We started to explore the town by land, after the boat tour

We all thought that we deserved a good dinner after having spent the whole day by strolling around.

10th Day Sailing from Stockholm to Riga

The ship departure time was 17:00 hours (5:00PM), so we programmed to load our motorcycles on board as 16:00 hours (4:00PM), and we headed to Erickson Globe Arena

We took our motorcycles parked in a street next to our hostel and,

went to Erickson Globe Arena

We took the lift and climbed to the top and contemplated the town from this angle too

We stopped over at Stadsgardsleden, one of the poular places of the town, on our way to the port

and then a stop over at Nordic Museum

We did some shopping for our dinner on board, parked our motorcycles in the ship and got to our cabins. We took advantage of the good weather, went to the deck where we planned to stay quite late and set our table.

It took almost 2 hours and a half to get to high sea.

Views of the land from the ship

Views from the interior of the ship

But we thought that the deck was more interesting and attractive

Meanwhile seagulls were accompanying us

Scenery started to change with the time passing by

New friends were made

And the ultimate beauty and grandeur a day could end up

11th Day Riga

The ship berthed to Riga around 11:00 (11:00AM. It was a little bit rainy. We took our motorcycles and headed to our hotel.

We left our motorcycles to the hotel’s parking and got to our rooms. Weather turned out to be comfortable, and we started to walk towards the old town, to explore Riga.

We had our lunch in a lovely restaurant at the town square

We started to roam around the old town after the lunch

Old Town’s square

The town was very activated due to a kind of festival matching with 21 June, the summer equinox and thus longest days and local people were wearing hats made of flowers.

Everywhere got more enjoyable when we got across the market place

While the orchestra was playing local songs,

and those who would like to do were dancing.

We slowly headed to our hotel towards the night
