Anyone want to weigh-in on methods for trail oil changes on long dirtbike rides? I'll ride my WR for around 600 miles on synthetic before I need a change. I've been trying to come up with a good oil reservoir location to carry enough for a on-trail change.

Maybe this is getting more involved than just the basic toolkit??

Well Allen, you said it ... Reliable. (Note: I own a WR250F )

Honestly, unless your really raging I feel confident you could go quite a ways beyond 600 miles. More like 1200 if running good synthetic.

As far as trail side changes go? No way. Go into town and dispose of old oil properly. Then go to local Auto parts store (usually they are better in small towns!) buy couple quarts of Mobil One (Extended or High Mileage) Car oil and do the job.

Yep, thats right, CAR OIL. Neither of the Mobil One oils I listed have friction modifiers, both are OK for your bike. I run it 1050 Tiger,
DR650 (45,000) and WR250F.

There are towns everywhere. No one stays out that all that long. Plan around a stop somewhere down the trail. Stock up on supplies, change oil,
clean up, gas up, eat and go!

I've run 600 miles/change without any problems and everything looking good, I'll have to consider pushing those #s up. And fair enough, the easiest solution is definitely to head into town.

Just read in my service manual that time is far more important than mileage. They suggested 3 months / 500 miles as the interval. Doing a 1000 miles over a week or two with the same oil seems reasonable.
