I'm told his wrists broke on impact with the first big rock. You're overanalyzing his reactions after going OTE. BTDT. Even with many years of experience, situations like this have you hanging on for dear life. I did a similar OTE a few years ago. I lucked out. Missed a 12" aspen by inches on one side, and a 3' boulder by inches on the other. The bike endo'd into a big shrubbery, tossing me over the top to land softly on my back in the bushes. Sometimes your guardian angel is wired on double lattes, sometimes they've taken an ambien.
