You're overanalyzing his reactions after going OTE. BTDT. Even with many years of experience, situations like this have you hanging on for dear life. I did a similar OTE a few years ago. I lucked out. Missed a 12" aspen by inches on one side, and a 3' boulder by inches on the other. The bike endo'd into a big shrubbery, tossing me over the top to land softly on my back in the bushes.

Sometimes your guardian angel is wired on double lattes, sometimes they've taken an ambien.
