"How much (and what) maintenance does the bike get every day? We know that Lyndon is super prepared for this and that he's been picking the bike apart time and time again and made sure that everything is at its top performance - how much does this pay off during the race? I'm guessing we're talking about changing oil and air filters at the minimum (and reattaching the nav tower every third day ;), but what else?

I'd also be interested in knowing how the amount of maintenance compares to other competitors (both elite and super amateur)."

Just curious, Lyndon mentions discovering muscles he didn't know he had. I'm wondering, for rookies like himself, how pre-race training has matched up to the reality. It sounds like he's prepared and not lacking for physical stamina, but perhaps his training regime might be tweaked were he to go again.

Don't forget the broken foot! it hampered his cardio a tad.

+1 on his dads perspective, what's he doing while Pyn out in the race? How long does it take for the bivouac to move to the finish point? And yes you can clearly tell Pyn his in his element and loving the ride each day.

I do know he's using a set of new mouses each day .

Good question John, I had the same thoughts when listening to the call last night. I'm guessing that it's probably hard for a working guy to train close to the reality of Dakar. Lyndon rides a lot but might never have done that many miles in that many days under that stress with that little rest.

I'm interested in hearing him expound on the physical and how he might train different should he do it again too.

I felt like I was in pretty good shape, both from spending time in the gym and riding, but there's nothing that precisely prepares you for not only wrestling a pig thru the dunes, but also holding yourself against the wind and buffeting of a few hundred miles on the road, and the vibration of a single for hours every day, etc. It's not the big stuff, and it doesn't risk incapacitating you, its not the big muscle groups that necessarily suffer, it's an accumulation of little niggling motions that it is impossible to prepare for. I guess this falls under "Dakar is not easy or comfortable", no matter how well prepared you are.

My experience was that after the first week, all that fades... you ride yourself into shape so to speak. Either that, or you don't notice the discomfort anymore when stacked on all the other discomforts.

I know it's a bit after the fact now but I've just got in and listened to the threeway interview and wanted to add my thanks (to everyone else's) to Nate, Ned and Lyndon for the time and effort to put these together.
