Another update this morning due to the heavy rains:

Cottonwood Rd. dried out a little on Fri/Sat only to become wet and impassable again on Sunday. Thanks for the updates Sue, Rick and others.

Please POST AN UPDATE THIS THREAD if you have any more updated information for the office that I can forward along and I am also encouraging the person who compiles the report to start looking in these threads as there is more info...

One more update, two today!

Conditions on the Cottonwood Rd. seem to be changing by the hour. You can experience everything form smooth-sailing 2WD conditions on the northern end, to deep 4WD stretches of sand through the mid-sections, to wet, slippery 4WD HC Tropic Shales on the southern end. There are also some dangerous shoulder nicks that are beginning to undercut the road in a few places. And it’ll all change tomorrow—or, this afternoon.

From the ranger:

Cottonwood, Smoky Hollow, and Smoky Mtn. roads were all hit by big storms in the last couple of days, all 3 becoming impassable. They’ll need some drying time and the forecast doesn’t include a lot of that. I’ll keep you posted as I get further reports.

Canyonlands National Park

No photos yet, but the Needles District is reporting some closures to backcountry roads, too: Colorado River Overlook Rd is impassable (standing water & debris), and Elephant Hill is 4WD only on access rd and unknown conditions beyond.

From yesterday evening:

Cottonwood Road is still closed as of this morning.
Hwy 12, from Boulder over the mountain to Capitol Reef, received some heavy rainfall yesterday. Capitol Reef’s unpaved roads were muddied-up. They’ll need drying time.
Chance of t-storms dropping to 20% daily through the week, but they’re still around as we move into September…

The Cottonwood Canyon Road is still CLOSED as of this morning—closure signs remain in place on both ends. All of southwest Utah, including Garfield and Kane Counties, is under a “Flash Flood Watch” through Tuesday evening, with apparently some heavy moisture coming our way. Gotta believe we’ll see some changes on those roads out there—let me know what you encounter. And be careful.
