70,000 miles too much for a '95 R110GS?

Got an offer for a trade, my DR650 for the GS. It has just had the valves adj and oil changed, final drive rebuilt last month, pivot bearings replaced last month, transmission splines lubed March of 2011. Just wondering what kind of longevity i could look for out of this bike. Owner says almost strictly commuter duty for the last 20,000 miles. Appears to be very well taken care of. 70,000 miles sounds like a lot but i know that these oilhead engines were known for being very reliable, I am just looking for a little insight as to what i should be looking for if i go to inspect the bike.

There is one chap on here who just rolled over 450,000 miles on his R1100GS.

I think you'd do just fine with 70,000 on it. I wouldn't bat an eye.
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it.

This is one impressive bike, you will have to take a while to get used to the German way of doing things and riding. When that happens, then wow.

So far no one has worn one out. Does not mean things will not need replaced, they will.. Easy bike to work on.

The only trouble spot remaining is if it still has the M95 transmission, with the non undercut shift dogs.

there have been people that get along with them, many were upgraded to M97 and are then fine.

You might check.

I hope not, my 1150 has 65,000 on it.

How it was maintained and what sort of shape it was in means so much more.

Ride on !!! 70K, the engine will out last the frame of the bike, keep it maintained and keep riding.

Different, yet similar, I got a 2004 1150 Adv with 70,000 mi. in February. I have logged 3,400 mi since then, not bad for really only 1 1/2 months!! With this early spring or no real winter here in the east it was easy!

However, this being my first boxer I find myself worrying over every little noise. I am going to be taking it into a BMW dealer and have them give it the once over, valves, sync, etc. and I know it will cost. But I figure it is piece of mind as I am not a mechanic.

Buy it, ride it, enjoy it!

Now, I need a good reputable place here in Maryland, and Battley is NOT my choice....

A lot of folks don't consider them 'really' broken in until 60,000 miles. I've seen plenty 1100s with well over 100,000 miles. If it's what you want I wouldn't let that mileage bother me.

no problemo.

you've got a fresh final drive which from the 100,000+ mile reports seems to be the thing that wears out. the motors are under-stressed and run forever.

I bought a 95 R1100GS with 62,000 miles last October.
It was well maintained and I've put 5000 more trouble free miles on it.

I would buy it. Everybody on this site are been great with info and suggestions if a problem should arise.

My 04 GSA has 70K miles on it. Just had the final drive rebuilt along with new pivot bearings. It's good for another 100,000 miles ! ! ! Buy the bike your looking at and ride it.

i had a 03 1150gs with over 100,000 miles with no troubles, i traded it for a 650 dakar so i could ride tighter trails though. both great bikes.

My 02 GSA had 81K on it when I picked it up last summer, rebuilt the TB's and put another 6K on it last summer. Ride it, keep the fluids fresh and you're good to go.

Uh-oh...the engine IS the frame on these things

I bought mine with 69,000 miles and I'm up to 83,000 a year later. I've never been stranded, but the bike has had "issues". Without diving into too many details, two of the head studs on my left cylinder have pulled out, causing the head gasket to fail. The good news is that it's an easy 2-hour repair. The bad news, for me, is that one of my repairs failed. A testament to the reliability of BMWs is that my engine is running smooth and strong even in its less-than-perfect state. I may just live with the oil leak until the winter.

My '95 R1100R gave me 14,000 miles of perfect service and that bike had over 60,000 miles as well. Bottom line: I wouldn't worry about 70,000 miles on one of these bikes.

Thanks guys

If i can get a hold of the owner this weekend i am going to check it out. Sounds like it has been maintained very well and looks great for a 95. Not sure on the transmission but he says runs great and is riding every day. Have long been waiting to listen to the missus and get the 1200GSA but i think i will try this out first for a while if the deal goes through.
