Thumb Adventure Summits - you ride 'em!

If you'd like the short story, please visit the Adventure Summits web site.

To keep abreast of updates, keep checking back here or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.

The idea for Adventure Summits occurred after many years of leading dual sport rides, organizing and riding in events at various rallies and rendezvous, and going on a few press junkets as a motojournalist.

Go big, pay small
Adventure Summits are a series of social riding events where sponsors help increase quality and reduce costs for the riders. These events typically occur in conjunction with other moto happenings and continue on-line throughout the year. And as they say on TV, there's an opportunity to win valuable prizes.

My hope is to grow this concept within our adventure riding community, of which I'm privileged to be a member. Volunteers are also an important part of the equation, and more is always better. Please PM me if you'd like to help out. Part of the Adventure Summits model involves returns to community organizations that help out, that is, once this sucker actually breaks even.

What's an Adventure Summit?
As you ride in an Adventure Summit, the idea is to test all your adventuring skills. As you ride in, you score points by taking detours to ride on adventurous roads and trails, camping along the way. You shoot pictures and videos, and then share stories. Eating and partying is a big part of all this. And oh yeah, there's a friendly little riding skills competition.

The whole point is more about having a great time with new and old friends than it is to win. Most riders care less about winning than they do about getting their bike dirty.

Here's what's on tap so far... more to come as pieces and parts come together.

Adventure Summit at Miller Motorsports Park, Tooele, Utah May 25-28
Held in conjunction with the World Superbike and AMA races, $100 covers premium camping, showers, three catered dinners and breakfasts, riding, seminars, movies and some beer. If you go to the WSBK races, you ride your bike on the Adventure Skills track, a paved and unpaved supermoto track with a very interesting, but optional, rocky desert wash section. More info & register here. at the site.

The GS Giant's Adventure Summit, Arkansas and Missouri, July 15-22
Held in conjunction with the BMW MOA International Rally. The event starts ahead of the rally, July 15 down in Arkansas… and there are a few ADV buddies laying out some real fine routes. A few days of riding, eating, drinking later, everyone rides north to Sedalia, MO to camp, do the rally and ride the Adventure Track. More info & Register here.

The Lewis and Clark Adventure Summit, Kamiah, ID, September 7-9
Idaho — home to places like the River of No Return Wilderness. Happy-Trail and SoundRider play host in Kamiah, which is right in the center of the action. There's great camping, world-class riding, good western food and another great adventure track to test your mettle. You can score extra points by riding to places like Hat Point and the Hess Road in Hells Canyon, the Kleinschmidt Grade, the Magruder Corridor and the Lolo Motorway, all classic motorcycle adventure rides. Registration coming soon.

Stay tuned for more events, and please, we're looking for more sponsors to show the love. If you would, please share this link with the makers of your favorite gear and suppliers of your favorite services.

Got routes?

One way to score points as you ride to an Adventure Summit is to take Adventure Detours. These are routes that are intended to get you off the slab and onto something a little more adventurous.

Good friend Steve Farson, author of The Complete Guide to Motorcycling Colorado has provided some great recommendations for riders heading to Utah from the east.

I'm looking for suggestions for riders from California, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico and Montana.

For instance, anyone heading through Elko, NV might like to check out the Ruby Mountain Scenic Area, with some excellent camping in the Lamoille Canyon.

If you've got some detours you'd like to share, please do.

Can you say SuMo?

Here's a shot of the Adventure Challenge track for the Adventure Summit at Miller Motorsports.

Hopefully, there will be no snow during the Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28... the days of the event.

If you're registered for the event, your WSBK ticket will get you more than a few laps around this course.

The track features the full spectrum of conditions that adventure riders typically encounter: tight twisties, unpaved roads, jumps, bumps, rocks and ruts. That rocky desert wash section to the left is part of the big dog option... the Ultima Thule... the unknown beyond the map.

Please register for the event here and if you're interested, volunteers are welcome!

Your support is very much appreciated.

East Coast

Sometimes you've got to get up and out of the house to do these exciting things. Last year it was in Pennsylvania. Pretty much East Coast. This year, Central, and a leg to the West.

RIDE THAT BIG GS!

Adventure Summits are open to riders on all brands of bike and all skill levels.

So bring that bad-boy SuperTen... but don't forget your training wheels for the sand...
