An Australian university recently did a study on the effectiveness of gear in preventing injuries. Click on the link to see a summary of their findings.

I dont wear mine all the time. 3 times in the last 40K miles, I wore my work/dress boots instead of my SIDI's. Helmet, gloves, jacket, pants? Yup, every time. The heat is not a factor. Ive got mesh pants and jacket and if its cooler, they have VERY functional liners. When its alot cooler, I move to the heated stuff. Here's the deal. We are all adults. It doesnt take a genius to figure out that your head is softer than asphalt.

Back when I was on sport bikes, my riding partner and I were riding a tick or two over the speed limit on some back roads in the middle of the desert. I was leading and he ran into a sweeping right hander too hot and over shot into the gravel on the opposite shoulder. By the time i saw that he went down and turned around to see what happened, he was already out of the ditch and walking around. All the graphics on the right chinbar/cheek/entire right side of his helmet were gone and it was ground down to the shell. Luckily, he was wearing a full face. Would he have been OK in a bucket or modular? Dunno, but I wont wear one.

Riding motorcycles is all about managing risk and determining what is acceptable to you. If you want to ride in shorts and a tshit then so be it, but I wont.

Shouldn't that picture be in the "When did we stop appreciating..." thread to praise the pure hardness of KTM seats?

That photo should be a required warning label on every set of chaps.

I do wear all my gear all the time. Inlcuding running up the street to test the bike. Why? Because I've crashed in less then full gear before and the pain that resulted in was not worth the expediency of not wearing it. A 50kmh crash took all the flesh off my knees when I was wearing only jeans and broke my elbow. While going over the handle bars at 160 at the track resulted in only the tip of my smallest finger broke and a couple of bruises.

Does that make me a wuss? Possibly, do I care? Not particularly because quite simply I do not like pain but I love motorcycles and it is very easy to enjoy the latter without experiencing the former. And to the op, I too learnedly from all of my crashes, the difference is that I only had to pick gravel out of my body once.

I OWN ATGATT, but wearing it ALL the time would be simply lying and delusional for me. Though, I will not ride without gloves or boots, whether it's my motorcross boots, road race boots or Thor 50/50 boots. I don't compromise there. But I am guilty of the "short" trip to the store or commute to work without my armored jacket, Draggin Jeans or other riding pant, or even helmet on hot days. It's my choice, and I like the freedom to choose. I don't put down or berate others for their riding apparel choice either. It's your ass, literally, so do what you like.

I think that some people that claim they ride ATGATT may not be being completely honest with themselves. To those of you that do, my hats off to you, and I respect your choice.

Background-I have been down a few times, including a high speed low side into a mountain at Deals Gap, and track crashes. Those were incidents of rider input error and I was ATGATT because of the particular riding situation, the style of riding involved, and my expectations of what could occur. Just sayin...

Wait, you wont ride without boots and gloves because you wont compromise, but you WILL ride without a helmet? I think you value the wong parts of your body.

Then again, maybe not!

I will do anything that keeps me on the bike riding. If it means I have to ride ATGATT then I will. SO I KNOW that if I fall or some asshole pushes me off the street I will be able to ride again really soon.

And these kind of question IMHO should be asked to those that fell down and lived to tell......do they think is overrated.....

Then again I deeply appreciate the fact that you chose not to drive with all the gear...and I will not any comments on that...ever...

I've been back riding for the last couple years after a 20+ year hiatus. I certainly don't heal as well as I once did and I've come to realize that I'm not superman. I wear ATGATT but don't preach it to others because we all need to make our own decisions and live with them.

Fixed that for you, cowboys rarely get road rash from falling off a horse. Squids and Pirates... well, that's another situation entirely.
