Ha ha… yeah, sorry. Got held up a bit.

I went for a short ride to a canyon on Sunday just to test the RC8R – as I mentioned I had a 2008 RC8, put quite a few miles on that one, did a few trackdays, etc. so I was very familiar with it. The new one feels very different, and yet strangely familiar… It is a HUGE improvement in every way. The most apparent change is in the smoothness of the engine. This is BY FAR the smoothest, most tractable superbike twin engine I’ve ever experienced. There are essentially no vibrations at all, no matter the RPMs. The power delivery is incredibly linear and predictable (much more so than with the 2008), the engine feels incredibly understressed, like it’s not even trying.

The stability of the bike is also remarkable - doing 110mph is so drama free it is almost unsettling, thrusting out of corners the bike responds without a hint of instability. This is the most deceptive riding experience I’ve ever had – doing 90 feels like standing still. At high speed it feels as solid and planted as my K1300S, amazingly enough. I am going to have to be careful on the street.

The gearbox is the other bit that feels from a different generation – completely smooth, all it takes is a caress with your foot to engage the next gear. It is positive, reassuring and flawless. A gearbox that once was the biggest negative with the bike is now one of the best implementations in the world. It is going to be awesome on the track.

KTM also changed the settings the bike ships with – when I got my 2008 it was set to “comfort” all around: pegs lowest, ride height lowest, clip-ons highest, etc. I have not checked all of it, but at least the ride height is now set higher from the factory. Sitting on the saddle I am on tiptoes (I am almost 6’ 1”), the riding position is definitely more aggressive than it was on the 2008. It feels perfect to me – comfortable, roomy and just aggressive enough. This is how I had my 2008 setup eventually as well.

Everything else feels fantastic – the Brembo monoblocs are as powerful and awesome as ever, the dash has been revised and polished and now it has a gear selection readout (two of them, actually). Clutch is light and easy to modulate, engine sound is far too muted with the stock can. Eventually I might have to spring for the Akra – even though it seems crazy to spend that much money just to get better sound.

Overall the bike is just phenomenal – a gigantic improvement over the original and one of the most unique, personal sportbikes money can get. Even better than I had hoped. The fact that now it can be had for as little as they cost is just fantastic.

Second week of September we are going to do 2 days at the track – I can’t wait!

You mean better pics than the ones I already posted?

Yeah, I am a terrible photographer and all I got is my iPhone, so that is as good as it's going to get.

Congrats on the bike! Good write-up (as usual!)

I have never suffered from envy, but right now I envy that you have a dealer so close by!
The machine looks b-e-a-Utiful!
I just sat a read about the engine in BIKE, same engine as in the new 1190 Adv. and it sounds like KTM hit it out of the park with that one. DAMN! I wish there was a dealer reasonably close....damn, damn, damn!

PS. I think your next investment should be to build a second floor on your garage!

Thank you both..

I am taking the day oiff tomorrow and hitting the canyons early in the morning - I am also going to take the RC8 to the Spring Mountain racetrack (Pahrump, NV - best track in the west! ) for two days in September, I'll have a lot more impressions to share after that.

You might be surprised:
(from the KTM site)
SETTING OPTIONS

The 2013 RC8 R not only offers extraordinarily relaxed ergonomics for all its supreme sportiness, but also more ergonomic setting options than any other series production superbike. Footrests: two heights, each with two positional variants. Foot levers: variable lever operating angle and lever length. Seat: two heights. Hand levers: variable. Handlebar: two heights and two angles.

I just saw that a dealership in California is selling a 2014 Demo/Press RC8R - I couldn't find any info on changes from 2013.

Bold New Graphics, or ?

A bit more than that - the 2013 also has new engine management electronics, slightly revised suspension, and finally a slipper clutch!

I meant - are there any changes for the 2014 - I know the 2013 has those.

Oh! Sorry!

No idea about the '14 - it might very well be the year KTM makes big changes to it (they now have both "performance" ABS and Traction Control from other bikes in their lineup, not to mention the new motor in the SuperDuke - eventually all that stuff is going to end up in the RC8R).

Either way, you are going to love a '13 if you get it.

OK, I just read your post (better late than never... ). I had missed the part where the demo bike is a 2014 model. That seems really strange - KTM generally releases bikes at the end of the year, and they don't come to the US until around March of the following year.

Also, that color scheme is from a '12, no?
